Idaho Connty Free Press E. McBboom ORANGEVILLE, IDAHO OFFICIAL CITY AMD CODMTY PAPER - - 1906 Thursday, March 8, The confession of 8teve Adams, one of ths parties under arrest at Boise for complicity in the 8teun enberg murder, adds another dra matic chapter to the history of that awful crime and further impli cates the bead officers of the Western Federation of miners who are under arrest. It also further emphasizes the bad taste of one or two newspapers and a few miners' unions who have openly declared their belief in the innocence of the accused without knowing what evidence there might be against them. They have criticized the officers who placed them under arrest and would imply by their remarks that Moyer, Heywood and Petti bone were incapable of committing crime. For the sake of humanity let us hope they are innocent for it is hard to think that so great a number of intelli gent Americans could be banded together for the sole purpose of committing murder. However, circumstances have pointed to wards them as being implicated and in justice to the prisoners and every honest member of the Federation the evidence should be thoroughly investigated. If they are guilty the Federation should be the first to want to find it out and get rid of them. If they are innocent they will undoubtly be acquitted aud lose none of the re spect of honest people by stand ing trial. This can only be de termined through the courts and open declarations of belief in either their guilt or innocence can only array one class against another and binder rather than help in the accomplishment of J ustice. The postal department is re-ad vertising for bids to carry the mail on the routes from Orangeville to Stites, Orangeville to Cottonwood and Orangeville to Florence. It is not known why the first bids were rejected bnt it reported that the department considered them too high. - It is pretty well known that no previous contractor has ever made anything out of these routes and it is about time that bids were made high enough to euable the contractor to give good service and still have a reasonable profit. The people are entitled to the best service that can be had in mail service, yet while the govern ment spends millions for show and almost worthless projects, the poor star route contractor is ground down to starvation wages so that he can not give the service requir ed and often is unable to meet his bille. Candidates for United Senators are stirring up quite a teapot tem pest over the question as to whether or not the republican state convention shall nominale a man for that place. There is no occasion for the public to get ex cited over this matter. Nothing is involved in the problem, further than that some particular candiate thinks that he can manipulate the convention and that such an opera bouffe nomination will have some influence with the legislature. Op position to the scheme comes from hated rivals who fear that its or ginator may thus win a point in the contest. Its merely one move in the game political, that we dear people need take no interest in.— Elmore Bulletin. The organization of a strong Commercial Club for Grangeville is a right step in the right direction. With tlie speedy advent of the railroad the town and country will make strides to wards population and increased diversity of products. Consequent ly the field will be wide open for the introduction of dairies and creameries, cheese factories, pack ing houses and other industries which will put a stop to the pre vailing practice of shipping out raw material aud importing the manufactured product, enterprise which will tend to keep money at home deserves encourage ment, and no Bmall part of the duties of the Commercial Club will no doubt be given to the support of such meritorious industries. growiug our Every Grangeville now has a real live Commercials club. Are you going to be a 'booster' or a 'knocker.' THE MAN IN DOUBT. The following by an unknown author should should be dedicated to the fellow who doesn't know whether he is a 'booster' or a 'knocker:' I sometimes think I'd rather crow And be a rooster, than to roost And be a crow. But I dunno. A rooster he can roost also, Which don't seem fair when crows can't crow. Which may help some. Still I dunno Crows should be glad of one thing, though; Nobody thinks of eating crow, While rooster they are good enough For any one, unless they're tough. There are lots of tough old roosters, though, And anyway a crow qan't crow, So inebby roosters stand more show It looks that way. But I dunno. Rugar is selling on the Missouri river at the rate of 36 pounds for a dollar, but here in Idaho, where we manufacure a million pounds annually, we must pay twice as much as is paid for it there. This is one of the beauties of the big sugar trust, which is in control. How much longer will the public stand to lie plundered and robbed by these greedy, grasping combi nations of capital? corporations controlling the nec essaries of life that are adding re cruits to the ranks of the Socialist party faster than all the literature and apostles of socialism could if they all worked without ceasing.— Ex. It will not only con tain much valuable descriptive matter of Idaho county but will be replete with interesting local news and ad vertisments of our progres sive business men. The ladies have done a great deal of hard work and an interesting issue may be expected. Railroad construction to Camas Prairie is giving Orangeville a great deal of valuable recognition. The big city papers are speaking in highest terms of our town and the rich country surrounding it. The The ouly ■ fair way to select United States senators is by a direct vote of the people and until this is accomplished it matters little whether the politicians name them in state conventions or in the legis lature.
