I ! I Editor ! I Idaho County Free Press ORANGEVILLE. IDAHO E. MuBROOM, OFFICIAL COUNTY PAPER Thursday, Am. 23. 1906 FARMERS AND THE TARIFF. The furmers can hardly approve the republican standpat program, when they find the price of wheat, oats, corn and cotton declining and the price of all they buy rapid ly advancing. Where does the boasted protection to agriculture come in under the present protec tive tarifT and how arc farmers pro tected, although the tariff law pro vides that 26 cents a bushel on wheat and 16 cents a bushel on oats he collected on imports? The price of wheat is now lower than it lias been for ten years or since the present tariff law was enacted in August, 1897. Those farmers, who are repub licans, should demand of their "standpat" leaders a fair deal, and if the agricultural machinery trust, the barbed wire combine, the lumber association and the clothing trusts, are to still he protected by the tariff in charging exhorbitant prices for their products, that some method of raising the price of cereals and keeping them stable should offset trust high prices. The fact is, however, that no tariff can protect the farmer on his products, of which the surplus must be sold abroad as the price paid by the foreigners for that surplus fixes the price here. The only relief that the farmer can receive is to he able to buy in the chea pest market and this he can never do as long as the trusts, that controll all he buys, are protected by the tai iff from competition. It is plain therefore that the farmer who votes for a republican congressman, is voting to'contiuue 'the protection to the trusts and for higher prices, with no protection to help the price of his owu products. / of The "eight hour" day witli which the administration is trying to head off the labor revolt, looks rather slim when confronted hy the proposition of,the French socialists. M. Jules Guesde's prbgram is "eighty minutes" work a day. . But then most socialists don't want to work at all. There is nothing so pleasant as that bright, cheerful, at-peace-with the-world feeling when you sit down to your breakfast. There is nothing so conducive to good work and good results. The healthy man with a healthy rniud and body is a better fellow, a better workman and a Imtter citizen than the man or woman who is handicapped "by some disability, however slight. A slight disorder of the stomach will disarrange your body, thoughts and your disposition. Get away Irom the inorbiduess and the blues. Keep your stomach in tune a.id both your brain and body will re spond. Little Indiscretions of over eating can be easily corrected and yon will lie surprised to see how much 1 letter man you are. Try a little Kodol for dyspepsia after your meals. Sold hy The Right Drug Store. Improve the Roads. Editor of Free Press: The citizens of Grangeville can do nothing of more practical im portance to the future growth of Grangeville than to promote and aid in the repair of the roads lead ing into the city. The railroad right-of-way is now all bought and paid for, and the road will be structed thereon. just where to expend our money in (lermaneut improvement of the public highways leading into the city. The roads north and west require immediate attention as soon as the fall rains set in. The use of a "split log road drag" after every rain will provide good highways which will do more to promote local trade than anything | <>n else ever suggested. It will also i give the farmers of the country dis- j tricts an object lesson whicb'tliey j will tie quick to follow when they i see how easily the roads can be im-1 proved at small expense by the use of simple apppliauces. The new j road recently opened in the west j of town shows wiiai can lie done in that direction. The most potent factor iu the j on county seat election which result ed in transferring the county seat ; from Mt. Idaho to Grangeville the horrible condition of the road between the two towns. Now it ! is absolutely sure that unless the road through the Pearson and i Yates lanes west of tow n, are not speedily improved, the growth of Grangeville will be materially we affected detrimentally. The far mere west and north will not haul we UMlr grain here over bad roads and better roa(l8 exist to tl,e west •f»«n. They will haul their box M**» to the new town, or else to I The con We now know w as I such station» a» may be established between here and the new town. ! A similar condition exists to the north. We must improve the roads leading into this town, or G ange ville will be up against it. Let the Commercial Club spend its surplus in road improvements during the 'coming fall and spring, and by the time the railroad is in operation we shall then be in shape to reap the benefit by having the farmers bring their grain here for ship ment, and thereby get the benefit of their local trading. This matter of good roads is of far-reaching importance to £>raugeville, and it should lake precedence over every thing else if we are to maintain our supremacy as the commercial cen ter of Camas Prairie. The citizens of Orangeville could not spend a few dollars to better advantage than in having some of these "split log road drags" made and giving one to each of the supervisors in all the tributary road districts, with instructions how and when to use it. They are only useful when used after a good rainfall. When so used they are of wonderful advantage, and when once used the farmers will cry for their continual use Citizen. The comiug Lewislon-Ularkston fair which will he held at Lewiston October 8 to 13 promises to be the greatest general exhibition ever attempted hy the people of the Gateway City." -No expense oi paius will he spared to make the event one to loug he remembered. No person familiar with exhibi tions, such au the Lewistou-Clarks ton fair, can doubt that they are of great practical and educational beueiii to the community in which they are held. The agricultural, horticultural aud stock interest owe much of their development to these exhibitions, and it is the absolute aim of the present board to contiuue and improve the line of work in all departments. With this end in view, the amount of money offered this year has been considerably increased. The fruit prize list and stock divisions bave been carefully revised and pre miums increased, and in addition several special premiums of merit have been addpd for district and individual displays. The blooded stock leatuies will be larger and more numerous than ever. Several of the greatest herds of the northwest will he represent ed and the management is assured of an extremely large entry list from local stockmen. The racing during the exhibition will he stronger than in previous yeurs. Most of the California, northwest and local horses will he there. The presence of the Cali fornia contingent was made possi ble owing to the Sau Francisco disaster. These horses are now racing at Seattle and the owners have announced that they will at tend the Lewiston meeting. The weeks racing will provide many notable contests and the hieakiug of track records should be looked for. I see the old parties hev both had their Kunvenshuns and put up tlier tickets so we know now what to dew. Wuzzent it funny to see how the republicans changed ther plans after they got to Pocatello, most of the northern republicans sed thet the state kunvenshun wuz not he the plase to nominate a senator,' they sed it wuz unconstitutional, thet it wuz uot the law, and thet it wuz rong to nominate a senator, but they wood let the legislature elect him as the law provided, but when Borah got in with the Mor mans and got control of the kun venshun, they fell all over one auuther to git in the band wagon, and they all Hopped over in the twinkle of an eye, and voted fur Borah, how is this for honesty, and the law? To the Editor Free Press: Last year there was a voluntary Sunday-closing movement, which prevailed ti quite a large extent in our city, but of late there has been a growing tendency to disregard it. The conditions that existed a year ago to make such a move desirable si ill exist. A weekly rest day is one of the rudimentaiy things in human ex perience. Some wealthy, retired, Boston sail, that bis observation, extending over a long period of years led h m to say that without exception, nhoae who disregard the weekly rent day period, failed, physically, financially and other wise. Money making in legitimate ways is proper; but is it not be neath the dignity of strong, vigor ous, healthy, manhood; is it not a species of idolatry, for men to per mit their business or their occupa tion to make slaves of them? Should not men be masters of their business or profession and not suffer themselves to be mastered by it? Was ever a greater truth spoken than that: ''A man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things that he posesses?" When the end of life comes, it will seem but a day's span to the longest lived among us: then, per haps not till then, will we realize: "This nigh i thy bouI shall lie re quired of thee, and then whose shall these things bt?" Let life, not material.things be the goal! Are we aware that a prosperity that places commercial interests above human interests, that does not place above the short lived it is in San ville. Prosperity that deserves the name, that is permanent and last ing, has retpect for the things that make better manhood and purer and stronger womanhood. Where human rigits are duly regarded property rights are safe. Let us unitedly help to make Orangeville what we want to see it become, a place where life and properly w|ll be safe, and where peace and quietness prevail, and where the chief concern of years ago a merchant of the rights of persons rights of property is and trausient; whether Francisco or Grange every citizen will be in developing a man hood and womanhood of which coming generations will not he ashamed. Let this he done re gardless of pur religious social or political affiliations. Grangeville, Idaho, Aug. 15, A Reader. 1906. Excursions via O. R. & N. and Union Pacific Ry.
