Wilson and family went trt West

Mrs. Fred White returned last
Tuesday from the south fork of the
Clearwater, where she has been
visiting for a week. Mr. and
Mrs. S. G. F'isher came out with
tier aud spent a couple of days in
the city.
Mrs. M. A. Webb and daughter,
Miss Adelia Webh, arrived here
last Sunday from Bronough, Mo.,
to visit a few weeks with their son
and brother, Wm. Webh, who is
engaged as machinist with the
Grangeville Implement Company.
Wm. and Dick Hanan, who
have been working in this city for
the last few months, received a
message Monday evening stating
that their father, S. T. Hanan, of
Dayton, Wn., was dead. They
both departed for home that night.
FT M. Sheridan, who for several
weeks past has been engaged in
the sewing machine business here,
received word Monday that his
lather, who lives at Oakland, Calif.,
was suffering from a paralytic
stroke. Mr. Sheridan left for his
home that night.
Mr. and Mrs. F'rauk McLean
returned the first of the week from
a trip to Pittsburg placers on the
south fork of the Clearwater.
Mr. McLean was preseut at the
final clean up and says they made
a splendid showing for the length
of time they have been working.
The Prebylerian ladies will hold
a cooked food sale Saturday, Kept.
8th, at Dr. Shaeffer's drug store
and will also sei ve ice cream and
cake. Sale commences at nine
o'clock. Come and get your Sun

W. A. Hall returned last Mon
day evening from Lewiston, where
he had gone to take his wife for
the winter. He hh>s that in the
few days already spent there Mrs.
Hall feels much improved and
feels assured she will he able to
spend a pleasant winter there.
In giving the nominations of the
republican county ticket last week
the name of FT C. Spedden was
unintentionally omitted.
Spedden, the present incumbent of
the office of surveyor, was nomi
nated by acclamation to succeed
himself.
Allen MacMaster. who, with his
family, has been visiting Mrs.
MaëMdSter's mother, Mrs. Sarah
Goveney, of this city, for several
weeks past, has purchased the old
Simpson place two miles north of
Cottonwood aud will move his fam
ily there at once.

spent a couple of days in town the

vention at Cottonwood.
Rufus Hawley, superintendent
of the Crackerjack mine, brought
out a $11300 gold bricl^ last Sunday,
which was the result of the second
clean-up for the month iif August

the co-operative telephone office is
being tilled, during her absence on

Mr.
Norman Holmes and Henry
Muuroe, two boys about twelve
years of age, run on to a black
bear last Thursday while hunting
on the mountain about three miles
south of town. The boys had
nothing hut a couple of 22-rifles,
so they let the hear go his way
unmolested.

Howde left last
Thursday for Portland to visit her
sister, Mrs. M. Mu I mop, and Mr.
Howde's mother, Mrs. R. A.
Howde, both of that place. ' Mrs.
Howde will be gone about six
weeks and expects to visit the
Lewistou-Clarkston fair liefere re
turning.
The young ladies of the Epworth
A pair of horae-shoeing nippera
were accidently run through W.
PI Swatinan's threshing machine
last P'riday and to the great sur
prise of all the machine was not
damaged in the least. The nip
pers were badly twisted and
broken.
Mr. and Mrs. Geo. A. Frost, of
Lewiston, are visiting old friends
in this city. Last Tuesday after
noon Mrs. Seth Cowan gave a
Lewistouian reception in honor of
Mrs. Frost. There were about a
dozen ladies present and a luncheon
was served. A guessing contest
was one of the social features of
the afternoon. The prize was
won by Mrs. Wallace Scott.
Ex-county Commissioner J. E.
liriscoe returned the first of the
week from a month's visit to the
Yakima hot springs near the
Meadows. He says he is much
improved and in better health than
he has enjoyed for years and is
very enthusiastic over the medi
cinal qualities of the waters of
these famous springs.
League will entertain the members

Miss Marie Jacques returned
Monday night from her trip to
Portland where she purchased her
fall and winter millinery stock.
Mrs. G. McCauley, returned with
Miss Jacques, and the two are to
open millinery parlors in the Pleu
fer building. The new establish
ment will be known aH "La Mode
Millinery Parlors."
The Grangeville Savings and
Trust company bank celebrated
the completion of its third year in
business last Saturday by treating
its patrons and friends to cigars
and other delicacies. This hank
ing company has done a successful
business from the start and next
season will construct a fine brick
building on the site of the present
quarters.
The Frkk Prkss is in receipt of
a letter from W. B. Hinkle, for
merly of this place, but now en
gaged with the Southern Pacific
Railway Company in surveying a
line through the Cascade moun
tains in Oregon. He says:

Wm. Campbell came up from
White Bird last Saturday to remain
a few days in this city. On his
return to White Bird he expects to
go over into Oregon with J. H.
Tyran, of Joseph, Ore., who is iu
terested in sheep in that country,
Mr. Campbell and Frank Burke
were not able to make their in
tended trip last week on accouut of
Mr. Campbell being sick for sev
eral days, though he is now
alright again.
Misses Essie Davis and Lnlu
Nickel, who were the successful
candidates from this district in tlie
Lewiston Evening Teller contest,
left Monda}' night for their trip to
Portland and Seaside. There
were thirteen young ladies
on the trip. They will spend a
couple of days in Portland both
going and coming and will spend
several days at the new and pop
ular summer resort, the "Break
eVH," near Seaside, returning to
Lewiston in time for the opening
of the Lewistou-Clarkston fair on
the 8th.

Fire Alarms.
Two fire scares in the past two
days is the record for Grangeville.
Last Tuesday afternoon a fire was
discovered in the basement under
Batty's pool room by Thomas
Whitaker, who works in the pool
mom. The fire was extinguished
' n a * ew minutes without doing any
damage. Ou the next day, yester
(li VV afternoon, another fire was
discovered in one of the outbuild
ings just back of the same pool
room. This last fire had gotten
quiie a start, hut as water was
| handy it was soon put out. The
origin of these fires is unknown
! and thei . etore mnch
excitement
has been aroused. The firemen
showed good work iu giving quick
response and getting the chemical
engine ou the scene in a very few
minutes after the fire was discov
ered.
"Brown Luncheon."
One of the most pleasant events :
of the season was a "Brown Lun
cheon" given by Mrs. \V . W .
Brown at her home 1 uesday after
j noon. Ihere were two spreads,
the first from one to three o clock
and the other from five to seven.
The predominating color of the j
decorations was brown with red 1
and yellow trimmings, with which ;
the dining room was tastily decor
ated. Not only were the decorations
brown hut the entire course < f the
dainty viands of the luncheon .were
brown and served in brown dishes,
By each plate was the following
verse on a brown card:
"When summer is past and au
tumn is near, the friends of the
'Brownies' are welcome here.
Surely 'tis wiser to choose,
'Brown' companions than blues."
Mrs. Brown is to be compliment
ed on the success of her luncheou.

Last Friday evening Mrs. J. S. !
Vincent gave a very pleasant party
from five to eight for her daughter,
Catherine. About twenty little
girl friends were invited and the
evening was spent in social games
on the lawn and in prize contests,
Helen Guthrie won the prize for
making the most words from
the letters in Giangeville, Idaho,
The first prize for making the
nicest doll liât was won by Irene
Parsons and the second prizd by
Mary Me In tee. A fine dinner
was served for the young folks and
they all enjoyed a good time. The !
lawn and dinning room were pret
tily decorated with lanterns, ever
greens and flowers. One of the
most interesting features of the
party was the punch served by
"Rachael at the well."

last Sunday at the home of the
