Idaho County Free Press 34-4 ORANGEVILLE, IDAHO Editor E McBKOOM, OFFICIAL COUMTY PAPER Thursday, Nov. 22, - 1906 ROOSEVELT AND SHAFTER. F 160 part part W blk and blk F lots part to 8 I'at 2 Win lot The death of Major-General Shaf ter last week, recalls to the writer some reminiscences of the Spanish American war which have had a far-reaching effect on the political history of the United States. Gen. Shatter commanded the army forces in the operations which resulted in the evacuation of Santiago harbor by Admiral Cervera and the anni hilation of his fleet by Admiral Schley. Like most army men, Gen. Shatter disliked newspaper men. On oue occasion lie slapped in the face a great war correspondent of a New York newspaper, and de ported two others from the isl and. As a natural result the cor respondent's gave Shatter's head quarters a very wide berth. But they found a warm welcome with Col. Roosevelt's headquarters and Ids opera-bouffe roughriders. The war correspondents very naturally resented the treatment given them by Shatter, and. pretty soon the American people became convinced that Col. Roosevelt and the roughriders were the sole and only push in Culm. The rough riders weie credited with winning all the victories, fighting all the battles, and capturing Sau Juan hill. As a matter of historical fact San Juan hill was charged and captured by a colored regiment, while the roughriders captured a smaller and unfortified eminence near by, called Kettle hill. But the Roosevelt press bureau made it appear to the American people, that Roosevelt was "The Hero of San Juan hill,'' and as such he will doubtless go down into his tory, although he is no more entitled to the designation than the writer of these lines. But the newspaper men did not stop lauding Roose velt by making him the hero and crowning him with all the glory of that campaign. They decried Shatter in their correspondence and created so much dissension among the troops in the field that a number of the officers, including the hero Roosevelt, signed a "round robin" to the secretary of was at Washington, requesting to be call ed home. There was so much dis satisfaction among the troops that only a few days before Cervera took out his fleet, Gen. Shatter wired Washington he would have to fall back tiuless reinforcements were sent him. There was not much glory to be got out of that cam paigu with its embalmed beef ami transportation scandals, but the newspaper correspondents at the seat of war took care that Col. Roosevelt got it all. The recent disbanding of a colored regiment may be an offshoot of the San Juan hill matter. At any rate the fame with which correspondents crowned Col. Roose velt made him governor of the state in in in in A. W. R of New York, and finally landed him in the presidential chair, while the general commanding was absolutely forgotten until his recent death brough this name again prom inently before the American peo ple. its cal of in so er do, all Verily tin* pen is mightier than the sword! The vote of the people has been taken and the verdict ought to stand as the wish of the people. That many are sorely disappointed goes without saying, but that every man elected to office is the choice of the people cannot be questioned. The opinion has been handed down and there is no appeal from it un til another election day. Let 11 s abide by the expression, remember ing that each official in precinct, county and state must do his duty or again run the chance of having the office door swing the other way.
