Deputy Sheriff Robbins, of Latah eounty, is In this vicinity looking up a man suspected of violation of the .ii.w, and a fugitive from Justice. « Ben Palmer has sold his Winchester ■sawmill to Harding Bros., recent ar rivals in this section, and will remove '• his family to Nezperce to make his ■»permanent home. The old Catholic church building is being torn down by Z. A. Johnson who recently purchased the property and he - «till begin at once the erection of a ■vtiodern residence for his own use. Nezperce prairie has never had bet ter crop prospects than now prevail. ' The season Is fully a month ahead of that of last year and the splendid rains of the past few days has put every thing In fine shape. ïit Is estimated that there are still about 85,000 bushels of grain at the .tramway the bulk of which is wheat -md belongs to the Woods company. All the other grain companies operat ing on the prairie hay? cleaned up for the season. There is much disappointment over the failure to get bids on the contract to repair the Kamiah grade. It is said rfhat the specifications were at fault and were made up from old field notes und that the bidders could not tell ■what was to be required and conse quently did not bid. Saturday night the store of Stephen Badger was broken open and about $65 was taken from the till. It is sup ,s»osed that the'thief hid in the building and fvas locked in when night came for the door was sprung from the inside .Vfter the till was tapped. There has 'been a great deal of pilfering in town for some time and this may lead to the .-arrest of the guilty parties. The well being bored here to supply the city water has now reached a depth of J30 feet. The basalt cap has been pierced and the first water «truck but not a supply equal to the » .lemand. The contract calls for a flow ' of 20 gallqns per minute and the con tractor expects to make such a strike between the present depth and 200 feet though he Is prepared to go 800 fleet'. If necessary. The Nezperce public schools win • close Thursday, April 20, with the can- tata "Columbia" presented at the Wil- son opera house by over 100 school children In the cast. All teachers at present In the school have been re- tained except the principal, Mr. Bar- •'tx>r, who does not wish to be employ- ■*d another year. The school has had the most succesfui year in its history And will open in the fall with more -teachers than are now employed. ILewiston is not the only town that »>« entertaining the electric line with Hsgh favor. It is talked here with en thusiasm and the public meeting fixed for next Monday night will be a mass meeting of the whole Nezperce prairie Some of the romlnent citizens of Nez perce will attend the meeting at » -Orangeville on Saturday nitfht and • Orangeville business men and business vnen from Lewiston are expected here -on Monday night. It is estimated that 'CWls town alone will subscribe $25.000' toward the project, anti that the prai se will add $75,000 more. a ■PLAT OF NEW IDAHO TOWN Wide Avenues and Numerous Parks for Heyburn. Boise, April 13.—Governor Gooding vjtes received from the government re £t&m&tlon office in this city a map of the new town of Heyburn on Snake river, situated on a portion of Uhe Minidoka tract. The map shows the state land that is Included in the townsite. and will be used by the state land board In connection with some formal orders to be made. There are 234 blocks and fractional '«locks in the townsite, reservation of ■»îhree full blocks being made for school houses. The railroad Is given a broad right of way through practically the center of the town, and will be crossed at the principal thoroughfares by means of viaducts. "The frontage aloug the river is to 'ioe parked and ground is left In va •ftous parts of the townsite for no less than a dozen parks, most of them to occupy a block. The principal avenues ♦taw been named Roosevelt. Idaho and " Lincoln. Telephone Line Completed. Mohler, April 12.—The Times says: ' The Nezperce Co-Operative Telephone . company now has its lines completed s co Keuterville and Green Creek. A lo ■ cal exchange has been Installed at Cot * ton wood. The company now has 25 connections on Camas Prairie, and ex : pecys to complete its line into Orange ville this summer. General Manager J. M, McGee, is now in Cottonwood .—completing the details for the work at Visiting at Walla Walla. Genesee, April 12.—Mr. Leon Follett and Mrs. Follett, of this city, are in Walla WaJIa visiting Mrs. McGrew. Mr. Follett is a member of the firm of Follett Brothers. Wren Buys Mors Land. Cottonwood, April 12.—Thomas Wren, of the railroad contracting firm of Wren & Grenough, last week pur chased from George M. Reed, ofj Grangeville, 640 acres of land near Denver. Mr. Wren has been purchas ing all the available land in this sec tion and i£ now feeding considerable stock. From all Indications It would appear that Mr. Wren is confident In the future of the Camas prairie coun try and being in close touch with the Northern Pacific probably has faith in the plans of the company with relation to its announcement that it would build on the prairie. Bond Issue Easily Carries. Wallace, Idaho, April 12.—With two small precincts missing the vote upon the question of bonding Shoshone county for $75,000 for the erection of a county courthouse has passed by a majority of over 1,000. The corrected figures give 1,420 votes for the propo sition and 345 against. Two missing precincts are Marble and St Maries. The former is reported to have cast 26 votes for and none against. The commissioners began regular quarterly session today and before their adjournment will advertise for bids upon the $75.000 bond issue and will call for plans and specifications for the building. They may select a site at this meeting. M'PHERSON QUITS STATE JOB Goes to Twin Falls Land & Watet* Company. Boise. April 12.—Alex McPherson, state horticultural inspector and pure food commissioner, hits resigned and has accepted a position as superin tendent of agriculture with the Twin Falls Land & Water company. His duties in his new position will be to look after the company's farming in terests and more particularly to in struct people from the east who have taken land in the proper methods of Irrigation. Mr. McPherson has been In the ser vice of the state for 12 years. Hje began as deputy inspector In Ada county, but for many years has been state inspector. It is probable A. F. Hitt, of Weiser, secretary of the hor ticultural board, will succeed him. BUILD NEW DEPOT AT COUNCIL Work to Begin at Once—Mill Improve, ments. Council, Idaho, April 13.—Work will begin at once on the removal of the depot from the east to the west side of town. For four years the P. & 1. N. company has maintained the depot in an old warehouse, entirely imsuited for the purpose. The change will necessi tate the gqildlng of about one mile of new track, besides switches. The Scheloske Manufacturing com pany is preparing to build a dry kiln and tv planer here. The company ht^s taken a «option on the old Richardson mill. The excavation for the new Odd Fel lows building is complete and work will be be£un as soon as material can be put upon the ground. It will be v combination steel structure 30x70 feet. NEWS OF ELK CAMP Fir« Narrowly Averted—Activity in the Min««, Elk City. April 12.—The News says: hat might have been a serious fire was averted by the nerve and ready wit of Mrs. J. A. Whitaker one night the fore p«rt of the week. She awokte about 2 o'clock and discovered the con tents of a| reading stand ablaze, und instead of following the time-honored custom of fainting, she seized a $12 skirt and promptly extinguished the flames, also the further use of the skirt as an article of wearing apparel. It is reported that the Silver Giant Mining company, of Spokane, through Its agent. F. S. Earnest. has purchased the Grangeville group. It was expeeteii that the Company would begin opera tions April 1. The company plans to have a réduction plant in operation this season. This is about the "steenth" time this property has been reported sold within a year. Matt Lpndln. manager of the Im perial Corona company's property, re ports an i pi portant strike on the Con solation. one of that company's claims. The new strike is supposed to be a continuation of the shoot on which the original discovery was made, and lies about 500 feet west of that point. The ore body is six feet wide and Mr. Lun din says, pans freely. Miles R(ce moved out to the United Verde this week; it being his inten tion to run the tunnel in and tap the vein. Thtf group is owned by himself, Mrs. M. A. Parr and L A. Strong. M. J. Sseeney started a force of men on the Syndicate group the beginning of the week. VINEGARHOLZ IS OUT Deputy Clerk Dismissed—Other Grist of Live Moscow Nows. During the last quarter the county auditor has filed 855 papers. The fees for the quarter amounted to $1.341. J. G. Vinnigerholz. who was recently dismissed from the office of deputy district court clerk by County Recorder A. P. Ramsteadt, has accepted a posi tion with Spotswood & Veach. Miss Clara Ransom, county superin tendent of public instruction, has set April 28 as arbor day and is sending out notices to the sçhools to observe the day with appropriate exercises. The Latah board of county commis sioners are considering the appropri ation of $1,000 to be used to advertise the resources of the county at thq Lewis and Clark exposition at Port land. Adrian Nelson has been appointed deputy clerk of the district court to succeed J. G. Vinnigerholz. Mr. Nel son was formerly recording clerk in the auditor's office. Ben W. Openheim has been appointed to fill Mr. Nelson's old position. Amos Berg was examined Wednes day for his sanity by Drs. Worthing ton and Delapine and declared to be insane. His memory has become a blank and he is wholly irresponsible, and will be sent to Blackfoot as soon as an attendant can reach him. State Senator M. E. Lewis has re turned from Boise, where he attended the session of the state wagon road commission. The commission inspect ed the road between Emmett and Horseshoe Bend on the Payette river, but the season was too early to in spect other roads. Moscow nurseries are sending out great numbers of fruit trees this sea son. F. L. White has just returned from Spokane where he went to de liver a carload of two year old winter apple trees to F. C. Fullerton and P. Nolan, who have large orchards near Spokane. The Moscow nurseries have recently opened yards in that city . PAY THUNDER MOUNTAIN ROAD State Turn* Over Money Which Was Tiad Up. Boise. April 12.—The state has set tled with the Northwestern Bridge and Construction company for the con struction of the Thunder mountain road, turning over $14,766.61. The money has been tied up in litigation over the road on questions of compli ance with the contract. There remains in the hands of the state $2,285 tied up by a ease in the federal court. This is part of *20.000 subscribed by mining companies toward the road. T. M. Barnsdall. of Pittsburg, enjoined pay ment on the ground that the road is not properly constructed. Other liti gation of a similar character was clearefi up, hut this ease still hangs. BUILDING BOOM AT KENDRICK Prosperous Potlatch Town Is Rapidly Forging Ahoad. Kendrick. April 13.—New buildings are continuously being erected here and within a short time Kendrick will be one of the best built cities in Idaho. The Lincoln Hardware company has contracted for a handsome new brick structure which will cover a lot 60x100. The building will have a handsome plate glass front when completed and will be one of the most imposing bus iness structures in the city. The work on the handsome new Temple building is fast nearing com pletion and will soon be ready for per manent occupancy. The plastering and finishing of the interior of the build ing is now in progress. The Kendrick Rochdnle company has let a contract for a large grain ware house and the ground is now being broken. The company expects to have the warehouse completed in time to take care of the coming crop of grain. The Kendrick Gazette will have new quarters. A contract has been let for a structure and work will start at once. BY KENDRICK BUSINESS MEN Election of Officer« Held for Associe tion. Knedrick. Idaho, April 13.—The Bus iness Men's asoclation has elected the following officers for the coming year: A. C. White, president : T. A. Hunter, vice president; John Bradbury, treas urer: D. T. A. Mackintosh, secretary. The committee composed of A. C. White and John Bradbury has already raised more than enough money to pay the balance due on the Little Bear Greek road. The town owed $116 and the committee has raised *129. so that now the organization is out of debt with money in the treasury. Pioneer's Funerel. Wallace. Idaho. April 13.—The body of William Stansfield. a pioneer olj the Coeur d'Alenes and other western mining camps, who died of heart trou ble a', the Providence hospital yester day. will be buried tomorrow. Funer al services will be held .«$ the Metho dist church at 2 o'clock. Interment will be made at Ward's cemetery. WALN AND TURNER RELEASED Young Men Given Liberty at Weiser on Filing Bonds. Weiser. April 11.—Ren' Wain and Frank Turner, who were sentenced to the penitentiary for seven years from this county March of last year on the charge of robbery, were brought down from Boise yesterday afternoon and released on bail of $500 each. The two young men were granted a new trial by the supreme court, the court deciding that the evidence was insuf ficient to Justify a conviction. The crime which they were charged with having committed occurred at Mineral, this county, in November, 1903. The young men have been residents of this section for a number of years and they had no trouble in securing bonds men. J. W. Lawrence, the man who is in Jail charged with attempting to break open the safe in Felthouse Bros.' gro cery store, made an attempt to burn the county jail Tuesday afternoon and almost successed in cremating himself. He set fire to the bed, which was en tirely destroyed. When the fire was discovered Lawrence was almost suf focated. The fire was extinguished and Lawrence resusticated. M. F.
