HARRIS, Editor and Proprietor. Montpelier, Idaho, June 15, 1899. Fourth of July. As mayor of Montpelier I hereby call a mass meeting Sullivan mill was blown up with dynamite by a mob of 1000 miners and two men shot and killed began Monday in the state district court, Judge Stewart presiding. The trouble which culminated in the destruction of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan property has been of long etanding. The miner's union of the Coeur d'Alens district have been very powerful and for many years only union men have been employed in the mines, ex cepting the Bunker Hill & Sul livan and the Last Chance mines ot Wardner which employed non union men. Great pressure had been brought to bear particularly on the Bunker Hill & Sullivan, and even threats had been made to compel the owners to recognize the miners' union and to employ only union men. The Bunker Hill people steadfastly, refused. Ôo^ » 23kb aboutJOOO possession Of a train at Wal lAce and rode ' to wardner, where they blew'uathe mill with dyna mite, destroying property valued at ♦300,000. In order to preserve order and protect property, Gov ernor Steunenberg of Idatbq, called upon the federal government for troops and within five days fK'qn the destruction of the mill, 1000 troops were in the Coeur d,Alene mining district under command of Brigadier General Merritt. Gov men ernor Steunenberg declared mar tial law which was enforced by the fedarel troops. In all about 800 miners were arrested charged with complicity in the riot, but more than half of these have been re leased. Among those Arrested were Sheriff James D. Young of Shoshone county and Coun tv Com Bolye and * Stirnson. The cases of the officials charged with aiding and abetting the riot were callad in court Monday in the form of impeachment proceed missionei s ings. The stato was represented by Attorney General Hays and Attorneys Borah and Forney and the defense by Colonel Patrick Iteddy and Messers Jones and Mnrnhv 1 Jones presented and argued a motion to quash and strike from the records tiie accusation made against the defendants, claiming the citation to appear had been issued in an illegal and irregular manner. The prosecution asked for time to prepare a counter argu ment. This afternoon Judge Stewart granted the motion to quash the information against the county commissioners, Boyle and Stim son, holding that Judge Mayhew had no right to issue a citation to appear while holding court in chambers. The prosecution then withdrew the information against Sheriff Young. New informations were filed in both cases. The »tat tutes requires five days notice to appear, so both cases went over until next Monday with the under standing that they might be taken up earlier by consent of counsel. The defense then endeavored to have Young reinstated as sheriff, but the court would not hear the matter. [was then called, Irt delivered his li fill over eight I. Under the the governor of d May 3rd, this LuKrtial law. r recites in the long other things, Eon of process is Ified by bodies of men and others; (that combinations of armed men resist the execution of process and i commit deeds of violence." Judge Stewart, continuing said: "The court is also advised through the press and public rumor that on April 20tb, a body of armed men came from Burxe, Mullan and other points of the county, in charge of a train of cars upon which was carried gunpowder or other explosives, proceeded toward Wardner, where they were joined by others, and then proceeded to what is known as the Bunker Hill <fc Sullivan mill, where the same was exploded and great damage done to property. That some time between the arrival of the train and its departure, John Schmidt and James Cheyne were killed. The truth or falsity of these matters is especially referred to you for thorough investigation." The judge then continued with an explanation of the rights, priv ileges and duties of grand jurors and their relations to others. The ;ri the grand jury is made up almost ex clusively of business men from Wallace, Wardner and Murray, The trials of the miners will be for j gin as soon as thescaaes of the : county officials are disposed of. ^ of -EGAL NOTICES NOTICE F0J< PUBLICATION the re fflcc at Blac] Land Notice is her« named settler ha to make final pre that said proof v the DistrictrCoufl of Idaho, orjln H Idaho, on June a AR point 40 rods cas of ko iüSï 1 Sf'bS^nin'*/ «!
