The MONTPELIER EXAMINER : i i i ! ! I I $1 00 i i , - ' Montpelier, Bear Lake Co., Idaho, August 21, 1903. ! 1 —— PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY BY THE EXAMINER PUBLISHING COMPANY, SUBSCRIPTION RATES: One Year, $1.50 in advance. Six Months, Entered at the postoffice at Montpelier, Idaho, as second class matter i Calamity Jane, Another old timer has crossed the range—famed in song and story, and unique* in class and sex—almost the j sole remaining personage connected with the stirring scenes and incidents which comprised the passing show which we call life as exemplified in early days when the paridoxical, pistol-pulling pioneer was trying to eliminate the frontier. Jane" is dead, and what was left of the wasted form and sin stained soul has at last found rest in Mount i Calamity Moriah cemetery at Deadwood. * Local history relates that in the early '70's Jane was one of the round of illicit pleasure and dawn ing dissipation. Later she acquired the prefix of "Calamity" which tn. W A.i,f„' ' iw g ^ . quently visited Wyoming, and dur ing the boom of '86 was a resident of Douglas. Three w r eeks ago she boarded a train running into Dead-1 , ... , ... , ,1 wood on which were a half-hundred ; members of the National Editorial Association, many of whom were ladies, and all of whom were ,i anxious to see this strange type of the half-world of the once wild an<T wooly west. Wasted away to littyfe more than a skeleton, hair gray a|id unkempt, sans teeth and reasonably sober, Jane received her visitbrs army of amorous Aphrodites who filled Black Hills dance houses and saloons—whose life was one dizzy i Il ' ting the occasion, even though ^he occasionally thoughtlessly blew| a whiff of smoke into thtir faces fr^m the two-for she was smoking. "Y with a dignity and decorum " are a lady-I am only a woman, was the reply to a good wife an mother who tried to talk to her—a as the ocean, as the poor soul well ' knew She made the Hills her . h« tag years, and wanted lor nothing—not even her , . . . ,7 favorite brand of boose. She was the one person in all that country who could ride on railroad train« W'ithout being bothered about fare, Food and raiment—and it was little * I distinction and a difference as wide she required of either—were fur* . , , , . , , , mshed by those of her class, who though bearing the black brand ot j the bar-sinister, too often set so called society an example in charity ami kindly Are of tbo.e in diet, esê. i , . v j i- ic i blie died as she had lived-fearleve °f the future, and \* ithout complaint, j . ,At her request, she rests in the j same plot and beside a former ad- j mirer and pard of her girlhood days j —"Wild Bill" Hickock, muidered A precious pair, say you?
