It Hits Them Hard« The Idaho City World, an Inde pendent paper with strong leanings toward democratic principles, sever ly criticises the fight that Dubois is making this year. In its last is- ! | sue it devoted two columns in criti- !, ci sing the speech made at Idaho j City by B. F, Clay, the democratic ; candidate tor Congress. The fal- ! lacy of the war that is being waged j by Dubois and his few followers is i shown up in the strongest terms j possible. Owing to lack of space i we can only reproduce the closing j paragraph, which is as follows: Democrats now fully realize that they have no party in Idaho. The leaders of the anti-Mormon party have stolen the organization bodily, name and all, and this little band of leaders are a new brand of Demo crats who have but recently joined its ranks. They are steering it to ; destruction to gratify their own po-1 to ride into office ' as they hope to in the sweet by and j fey> on the. high waves of religious j fanaticism. They are now trying to raise the wind that will roll the I n litical ambitions waves, on the crests of which they hope to ride toward the blissful shores of fat and lucrative official dom. The anti-Mormon party is a gigantic fraud, full of guile, hypoc racy and deceit, hatred, intolerance, venom and the spirit of persecution, and primarially a longing for office which they knew could not be grati fied in the field of legitimate poli tics, and hoped to be able to work up a religious prejudice that would in turn w r ork to accomplish their personal ends and satiate their c:rav ings for office. They are not old, tried and true democrats, but recent converts. The genuine democrats are not hearing my of the old demo cratic principles which they love so well, taught. They see a new leader ship leading it, or trying to lead it into new ways, and hear preached a strange doctrine, a doctrine which the great father of democracy, the illustrous statesman and grand patriot, Jefferson, fought with all the power of his great, heroic soul and against which he warned the people, above all things else, to be of—the doctrine of religious That is the these new leaders are and at a time when, in » ' ware hate and persecution, doctrine preaching, all the history of Idaho, there is the least excuse or reason for it. Mormon commits a crime, he should be punished, but the stirring up of religious prejudice should be ein phaiically condemned.
