It will be interesting to watch
the struggle between Ex-Presi
dent Roosevelt and his followers
on one side and the group of
statesmen headed by LaFollette,
Cummings, Borah, Hadley and
Works, for control of the» repub
lican party, or rather the control
of the progressive wing of the
party. If the republican party is
to be reorganized and survive, it
must be dominated by the real
leaders of the progressive move
ment within the party, not with
out. When one realizes that at
least seventy-five per cent of the
voters of all parties are progres
sive in the accepted sense of the
word, it will readily be seen that
progressiveism, as applied to all
future legislation, will be very
much in evidence both within and
without congress. The old regime
that dates from the close of the
civil war is ended.
Mr. Taft,
though a perfectly honest and
capable man, failed to turn back
the rising tide of so-called pro
gression, born of a generation
without the pale of influence com
ing from our great civil war, and
retires beaten but not disgraced.
We predict the speedy reorganiz
ation and ultimate triumph of the
republican party under the leader
ship of Borah, Cummings, LaFol
lette, Hadley and Works.
President-Elect Wilson has de
cided to call an extra session of
congress as soon as he is sworn
in as president, to reform the
trusts and reduce the tariff. This
is in keeping with the time worn
precepts of the democratic party.
Something must be done to satis
fy the people who have put the
democratic party in power. Not
withstanding the fact that a minor
ity vote of the people have called
the democracy to power, it was
univel-sally agreed by all parties
before the people in the recent
campaign, that the tariff should
be reformed in some of its most
objectional features. It remains
for history to record the success
or failure of the proposed legisla
tion. All those not in sympathy
with the democratic party will
hark back to 1893, but the
"powers that be" will see to it,
if they are not too deeply pared,
that there is no recurrance of that
disastrous period in American
history.
$1,600 for plans and specifica
tions for a bridge across the
Clearwater at this point is a pret
ty stiff price to pay an engineer
when one remembers that any
reputable bridge company would
be glad to furnish the plans free
if their bridge structure was ac
cepted. But what's the use, the
taxpayers voted for a continuance
of the present "economical" and
business like administration, so
t ike your medicine and remem
ber that the kind of talent that
builds bridges and opens up town
sites can't be secured for ordinary
pay. The next on the program
will be the payment for the B-H
culverts, so plentifully used dur
ing the past season.
Andrew Carnagie says the
condition of the Universe, from
his point of view, is exceedingly
rosy and that women are almost
angelic. We agree with Andy in
his last conclusion, but not hav
ing an interest income of $1,000,
000 per month, we still think there
is a slight chance for improve
ment along other lines.
Bryan has been summoned to
meet Wilson in the Bermudas,
and the wise ones politically are
guessing his mission. Not being
on the inside in things democratic
we can only surmise that some of
the important matters up for dis
cussion will be the Blake post
office and the alleged betrayal of
Bob Crow in his race for the of
fice of coroner.
Many reasons have been ad
vanced throughout the state for
the defeat of Governor Hawley,
but the one most plausable to us
seems to be, that Jim, like the ru
ral pugilist, "tried to cover too
much territory.''
Slight earthquakes were felt

nothing, a severe shock was ex
