MELVIN, Publisher _ BIG WORK FOR THE SCHOOLS. There are so many important things connected with the adminis tion of the public schools that the best efforts of all persons connected with them are demanded. To keep the teaching staff up to the required high standard is no small task. School boards themselves must know the re quirements to accomplish this much, to b€ able to tell when they are get ting what the people are paying for in the teachers employed. Advunces are made in schools as everything else. To keep pace with the onward march of progress that should mark the work of the school room it is re quired that con icientious thought and study be given by parents, by teach ers and by trustees. There is no room for any other kind of sendee for the schools. Saving Demanded. .(From the Salmon llerakhj Salmon city, Salmon school district, and Lemhi county must ail economise, h'ox a couple of years, at leust the general taxes should be shaved 30 per ; cent. For what's the good of levying ! tjtxes so heavy that 30 per cent of the 1 people can't pay them? it does seem strange that the public throttle should run wide open for more than a year after the private speed limit had been lowered. We need public of ficials who will conduct public affairs just as they would run their private affairs. There public boards can't save our faces this year; it's too late; but they can save us quite u bunch during the next yeai^-if they will. And they will.
