The United States Civil Service Commission has just announced that examinations will be held for the posi tion of ranger at the Supervisors' head quarters at every National Forest April 23 and 24. Experience, a thorough knowledge of forest conditions and a sound body, rather than book education, are the qualities sought in examining appli cants who desire to become forest rang ers. The man must have the ability, make simple maps ard write intell gent reports upon forest business connected with tho position. In Ari zona and New Mexico, the ranger must know enough Spanisli to conduct forest business with the Mexican users of the Nation's forests. Personal equipment and horses for use in connection with duty of a ranger are furnished by the rangers themselves, aud not by ihe Forest Service. Working under the direction of the Forest Supervisors, the ranger patrols the r orests to prevent fire and trespass, estimates, surveys and marks timber, supervises and performs other duties which a man thoroughly familiar with forested regions and possessing a fair education is able to fulfil,. Only those men who are at least 21 years of age, and not more tnap 40, of g rod character, temperate, and in good physical condition are eligible to take the examination. The salary paid 10 beginners is $75 per month. Compen sation runs as high as 81,400 per year for rangers who have had some experi ence and demonstrate their capability, Still better places aro open to these men, for it is the policy of the Service to fill vacancies in higher posi tions by the promotion of rangers who have proved their capacity.
