Experience, a thorough knowledge of

qualities sought in examining appli

The a >p leant should be thoroughly
familiar with the region of the country
in which he seeks employment. In Ari

know enough Spanisli to conduct forest
business with the Mexican users of the
Nation's forests. Personal equipment
and horses for use in connection with
duty of a ranger are furnished by the
rangers themselves, aud not by ihe
Forest Service.
Working under the direction of the
Forest Supervisors, the ranger patrols
the r orests to prevent fire and trespass,
estimates, surveys and marks timber,
supervises and performs other duties
which a man thoroughly familiar with
forested regions and possessing a fair
education is able to fulfil,.
Only those men who are at least 21
years of age, and not more tnap 40, of
g rod character, temperate, and in good
physical condition are eligible to take
the examination. The salary paid 10
beginners is $75 per month. Compen
sation runs as high as 81,400 per year
for rangers who have had some experi
ence and demonstrate their capability,
Still better places aro open to these
men, for it is the policy of the
Service to fill vacancies in higher posi
tions by the promotion of rangers who
have proved their capacity.
