An erroneous statement is going the rounds of the press that, members of tile A. O. U. W., now engaged in the liquor business will be compelled to forfeit their beneficiary certificates. There is no truth whatever in the statement. The law passed at the last, session of the Supreme Lodge was for future guidance of subordi nate lodges. General Law No. 4 of the Supreme Constitution was amended by adding thereto another section which reads as follows: Section f>. Any member of tlieor ■ who .shall, after Aug. 1st. ISM, •‘liter into the business of selling in toxicating liquors as a beverage, shall be expelled from the older. The Big Race. For the past two week- the prin cipal subject of conversation in Haw thorne sporting circles has been the footrace between Joe Klein, weight -MT pounds, and Jake Trail, weight 230' The stakes were #40 a side and the distance fifty yards Some money was bet on the outside, and a general interest was taken in the re sult Promptly at 3:30 Sunday afternnom both ra -ers appeared on th' track. J; lv was gorgeously arrayed in pink tiguts and yellow stockings, while J. T. was resplendent in red tights ' amd bodice and black silk stockings. Both were in good condition, but,I. T. showed signs of overtraining. Both were greatly admired by the ladies along the track. After scoring for half an hour, they got away well to gether. with J. K. slightly in the lead. They were belly and belly for the first 20 yards, when J. K. kicked a feather and stumbled. It was a fa tal stumble, for J. T. forged ahead and kept in the lead to the -tn-vard I post. Here the.safety pin which held his tights up gave way. cad, horrors! his harness fell down. Ilocould hear J. K. hitting the earth close behind, 1 so he abandoned all style and grabbed his falling garments with | both hands and by a superhuman ef fort crossed the wire half a belly ahead of his opponent. Tim \ lit sec onds. Mr Klein took his defeat philosoph ically, and Mr. Trail kept the boys drinking beer all the evening. Mr. Trail weighs 23n pounds, and says j he will run any man in th> State whose weight, is 225, for $200. Harry Epstine preferred. The Metal Market. From the Denver Ores and Metals we take the following prices at the close of the past week: Silver. 73 j Lead, 3.021 Capper, IB Iron, 13.00 Quicksilver (flask), 42) Antimony, 14. Borax, 0J, Tun attempt of the Democratic or gans to make silver the scapegoat of the present crisis is so puerile that they are abandoning it. That a country should be plunged into pov erty because it has too much money metal is an absurdity too strong even for the Democratic stomach. The cause lies elsewhere—it lies in this threat of the Democratic free trade platform: We denounce Hepuhllenn protection as a fraud; a robbery of the grout majority of the American people for the bonolit of the few. Wo declare it to be a fundamental principle of the Democratic party that the Federal Government has no constitutional power to Impose and collect tariff duties except for the purposes of revenue only. Let us summarize some of the re sults of this menace 1.1 American in dustries. Since the 4th of March, three great railway systems, the Reading, the Erie and the Northern Pacific have passed into the hands of receivers. Since the 4th of March, all the other great railways, such as the New York Central, the Pennsyl vania the Union Pacific, the Southern Pacific, and others, are taking off trains and discharging men. Since the 4th of March, 4tit! banks have failed. Since the 4th of March, li.11(111 merchants have failed. Since the 4th of March 3110 manufactories have closed. Since the 4th of March, !hin, 000 operatives have been thrown out of work. Cannon, the California traitor to the People's party, to his State and to his country, ought to be met on the Colorado on his return from Con gress by his constituents and hanged to a telegraph pole, and his flesh given to the coyotes. The miserable wretch sold his party iu the L "gis lulure last Winter to the Democrats, and now sells himself to Cleveland and votes for the repeal of the Sher man act of 1890. We shall wait with the greatest anxiety to see if his con stituents have lost all self-respect and self-independence by permitting such a vile serpant to disgrace the Gold State by entertaining his ap pearance there again. The Colorado desert and the intestines of the coyote are the proper places for his future ; abode.—[Silver State. —I We have received thoCongression-, : ai Record containing the speech of lour Congressman, Francis C. New-; 1 lands, against the repeal of the Sher-. | man Bill. It is a masterly effort | full of unanswerable argument and 'solid logic. We regret that our ! limited space will not permit us to, print the -p ech entire, and any our ; tailment of it would give but a poor idea of the great speech.
