A THEATRICAL ROMANCE.
Tbey sometimes tell a gao l story in
Chicago, sod one recently related about
leading aator in that oity jg well worth
rehearsal. The gentleman was young

As ooumonly happens with the actor
wno piaya me lion s part, many rooian
tio ladiei were in love with him. Of
these one was not content to let con
cealment, like a worm in the bud, feed
on her damask cheek. She wrote the
aotor a latter intimating delicately but
clearly that he had made a oonquest of
her heart, and telling him that at the
matinee od the next Saturday afternoon
he would see ber Bitting in the front row
of the dress circle, section F, No. 39.
"I shall occupy the same seat every
Saturday afternoon, so you will always
know where to look for me," said the
fair letter-writer, and then added, "I
trust you are an honorable gentleman,
and will keep the reoeipt of this letter a
secret." The epistle was signed with
the mellifluous name of Sadie Lathrop.
Now, the aotor who cut such a dashing
appearanoe on the stage was a sober and
virtuous family man, who had for a wife
the leading lady of the company, one of
those determined little women before
whom it baa ever been the fate of Adam
and sons of Adam to bow down in
obedience. She oaptured the letter from
bis enamored correspondent, and seoure
ly confident in her own supremacy,
waited for her vengeance after the cynical
manner of little women in general. A
second letter came from the hapless
Sadie Latbrop, in which, after some soft
nonsense in regard to the sweetness of
her "dear Eugene's" nnmn alia dm
Sosed a meeting at the corner of Dear
orn and Adams streets, at nightfall on
Monday, and promised to appear in seat
39, seotion F, of the dress circle, on
Thursday evening. But the aotor failed
to keep the appointment, of course, and
the lovelorn damsel had to forego the
pleasure of ber visit to the theater on
Thursday, as it was Thanksgiving day.
Sba was not discouraged, however, but
dispatched another letter, in which Bhe
suggested excuses for the recreant swain's
abeenoe, and gave more particular di
rections in regard to another rendezvous.
"In order," said the confiding bat nn
grammatical creature, "that you will
more readily know that it is me,
sal that you make no mistake, I will
wear a whita handkerchief round my
neck." Failing an interview, she renewed
her promise to be at the next Saturday
matinee "in the same seat that I told
you before. No. 39, section F, dress
circle." The actor's wife read this an
nouncement with the satisfaction of a
cat that is watching for her prey and
hears the mouse gnawing. The eventful
afternoon oame, and husband and wife
appeared upon the stage as bero and
heroine, while in seat No. 39. seotion F,
dress circle, sal a gorgeously arrayed
woman with a white silk handkerchief
about ber seek, shining as a signal, like
Navarre's plume. It was in tba wife's
lines, she took the part of an aotress to
invite her admirer to see her play,
"Come and see me, Major, won't vou?"
she said sweetly. "Oh, yes, I'libuy a
seasou tioket," answered the gallant
Major. And than the mischievous little
woman, starting directly at her conspic
uous rival, got off this preposterous gag:
"Do, and be sure you sit in seotion F,
No. 39, and wear a white handkerchief
ronnd yonr neok so that I may be sure
to know you." The result is best told
JJ giving one of the letters direoted to
her husbaud, which the spiteful little
Tixen opened in Monday's mail:
"You were all very much amused on
Saturday afternoon, were you not? I
supposed you were a gentleman, but I
no walizs that I was mistaken. I
i.t ,on favor to let no one know
ot the letters I wrote you, and oontrary
to my wishes, there was not one of the
oompany but what knew of it and the
seat I was to oocupy. But I think yon
were all a little fooled, as I did not oo
espy No. 39, seotion "F," as Miss Nor
ton so facetiously remarked. I gave my
"oket to a friend, and oooupied a seat
on the opposite side ol the bouse. For
1 s afraid something, I did not know
Wut, would be said or done whioh I did
t like, and I was right in my surmise.

she questioned me, and I told her the
mention of the number of the seat she
