by Meeker of taking undue liberties with
his girl, his nnuie proved a misnniner,

The witness Not altogether. .
' Attorney Now didn't you hug her?
Witness Yes, by mistake. (The jury

Attorney-i-Pleiise explain.
. Witness X was sitting on the sofa
alongside nay wife when suddenly a gust
of wind put out the light. After the
light Was txtioguished I heard a noise as
if people were gettiug kissed sensation
so I thought I'd stand in, I grabbed the
lady next to me, thinking it was my
wife, and when the Innip was relighted I
lound it was Miss Clark that I had hold
of.
The laughter in the room was checked
by Constable Metcalf.J
Attorney -Did you kisi her?

don't think I did.
Attorney Why are yoti not sure?

Attorney Now don't you know yon

Witness I won't swear positively
whether I did or not.
Attorney If you had beau Bure it was
your wife, would you have kissed her?
Here the witness looked round an
easily for a few seconds, and not eating
his wife in the Court-room, answered,
with a grin, " No "
This oaused another general laugh aud
the witness left the staud. lie was
more than astonished a'momeut after
when bis wife was culled. She swept
out from the bach room and took the
stand, with her blaok eyes snapping like
a tiger's. At tbe eight of ber, Adams
presented a pitiable appearauce and made
himself ng small as possible behind Con
stable Metoalf. No man in the Court
room would have chauged places with
him for a thousand dollars.
Mrs. Adams had been subpoenaed for
tbe prosecution, but her husband labored
nnder the mistaken belief that she bad
been excused. The District Attorney
must have known that it was dangerous
. to put her on the stand, but he oould
not resist the temptation. She was mora
than anxious to testify.
"We were having a liitle social party
at our house last Tuesday evening. I
was sitting beside my husband ou tbe
sofa when he asked me to go across tbe
room and intorduce a couple of people

then tbe light went out, Soon after,
Miss Clark, tbe girl Meeker came with,
slid over toward my husband that man
sneaking down behind the Constable.
Then I heard 'em kiss. X told Meeker
tbat it was a put up job, and be knooked

just right."
Miss Lucy Clark, who lives on North
btewart street, testihed tbat she was
sitting near Mr. Adams when tbe light
went ont. Everybody wan rnshiog to

get up near Mr Adams lor protection,
be being a married man. (Jreat merri

Distriot Attorney Did he kiss you?
Miss Clark (blushing) Ho thought I
was bis wife.
Tbe Court Did yon kiss him buck,
thinking be was your busuandr
At this sally the Court the speolators
laughed uproariously, nod it required
several minutes to restore order.
Miss Clark deolined to answer, and
the Court decided tbat she need not
criminate herself.
A yonng lad named Armstrong, a
nephew of Adams', swore that his unole
promised him a dollar to blow out the
light when be gave the signal. Adams
scratched the top of bis h ad as a signal.
He gave tbe signal just after bis wile left
him.
Tbe jury found a verdict of not guilty.
When Adams next has an oocaxion to
Boraton his head, it is possible that he
will find less hair there than whan he
scratched It the last time.

Tnn Ex-Empress Euoenis. The ex-
Empress of France is said to be one of
the richest widows in Kngland. In ad

ciatle in Spain and a nice place in Switz
erland. Cut bard cash ia what oomes
most useful to dethroned sovereigns who
hope to return, and of this the Empress
has long had abundance. It ia estimated
in Paris that she is worth at least a mil
lion sterling. Only recently she sold a
large block of house property in the Bue

properly, bequeathed to him by tbe
grizzly General who had been equerry to
tbe Frinoe when he toddled about the
corridors of the Tulleries nearly three
feet bigh weighted with tbe miniature
uniform of a colonel in the Gent Garde,
This vast property was no enoumbranoe
to the impress whilst yet she bad a son
to live and soheme for. It was drained
pretty freely by tbe Bonapartist organs
of the press in France. The Orde and
the Pays were lavishly supported by the
Empress, and she also drew handsome
checks in favor of the reduction of the
Gaulois. Tbe need for keeping these
fires warm is now dead. The Empress
ia not likely to keep newapapers alive to
work for ber good cousin Jerome.
