I' 't r i n .4 hi- IT i 1 1 i "J ! f The I'hicajfn, Milwaukee & St. Paul railway officials aaid recently that it was probable that par rails would soon be given a comparative trial on their road with iron ami steel. It ii said in favor of the new materia! that the coat per mile will 1m less by one-third than that of steel, which on many lines has almost displaced iron, and that it will last much longer, being almost indcstruutalilo. There is no expansion or contraction from heat or cold, and there are no loose or open joints. Being much lighter than steel the rails can be made much longer, the connections even, and a smooth road bed. It was also said that much heavier trains could be hauled over the track made of this class of material, the adhe sion of the drivers of the engine to this being greater than to steel. Conse quently au engine of the same weight and cylinder surface can do a far greater amount of work without a corresponding increase in the cost of fuel. The smooth ness of the rail it is claimed, decreases materially the wear and tear of the roll' ing stock. The rails are made wholly anil entirely of pressed pulp paper, and are so solid that the sharpest ax will not make the slightest impression upon them, and the action of the atmosphere bos no effect w hatever. Car wheels made of the same material have been given a thor ough teat by the Milwaukee Company, and have eiven the best of satisfaction, and it is thought that paper rails will prove equally as satisfactory. At no time in life is a man so com pletely upset by threats as at the tender age of four, when his mother tells him she is going to cast aside his first trousers and put nun back m frocks.
