The Boston Globe, in reviewing a re
cent lecture by Kate Field on the "Mor mon Monster," nays: Polygamy, alio said, though "the cornerstone of the Mor mon church," was not inserted in the article! of faith, and n.u not taught until the unwary had bceu "(athereil toZion." The monstrosity of the revelation on ce h'stiul ninrriajjo was fully shown by quo tations and the elastic eonscicjico of John Taylor, now "projihet, acer uud rcvela tor" to God'a chosen people, was exempli fl d iu his denial of polygamy in 1850, wli-ii lie himself rejoiced in multitudin cui hoiucholds. Miss Field stated that the Mormon women were not happy iu polygamy, and illustrated her emphatic ilctiiul by stories of great pathos aud in finite suggestion. Her extracts from IVigham Young's sermons, and from th"?.' '. his counsellors were forcible ar guments on the Gentile side. Indeed, throughout her entire discourse Miss F ield clinched every statement with Mor in'.ri proof, rarely going to Gcntilo au thorities for vital facts connected with hr r doeply interesting subject. The con tr.ivt between the preaching and piaotico of polygamy was fully displayed. Mor mons claim that there is a vast difference between bigamy and polygamy; thatonly good men are allowed to take plural vivei and that no saint takes more wives than he can support. Miss Field upsets these lrcautiful theories by graphic pic tures drawn from life. The claim, too, that polygamy produces finer offspring van shown to be an insolent falncy. Miss Fluid did not deny that Mormon women declare their belief in polygamy and their satisfaction in its practice, but sho un ravelled this mystery by explaining the conditions under which the sisterhood live, and how polygamy has been ground into them as tho vital dogma of their re ligion, upon which their everlasting sal vation depends. Repeating a conversa tion between a first wife and herself, Miss Field showed a looseness of divorce among the saints which has never had a pan dlel among the most depraved of Gentiles. During Brighatn Young's, reign the prophet turned many a dishonest penny oy granting divorces to his people w hile admitting that they were not worth the paper they were written upon.
