The exceedingly good people of Now York have made ft law against the con tinued existence of "Buckett Shops." The "Bucket Shop," so called because there, it was said, one might speculate in grain ia as small quantity as a bucket ful, is simply a small copy of the large gauibliug establishment, called a grain, produce, or stock exchange. The legis latures of Illinois and some other states have made laws looking toward the same result. The reason the "Bucket SIiqjj" is to be squelched is not at all be cauoc it invites people of small means to spend their meagre savings in gambling, . but I ccnuse it takes away a certain amount of "legitimate business" from the more "respectable" because richer ex changes. This is all done ostensibly in the interest of good 'morals; but rcaly to keep up a monopoly of this peculiar kind of gambling. Yet nous of the Legislatures which have passed these laws would, for a momeut, dare to li. oense a faro game, wherein the "outsider1' has a much better chance of winning tbau when playing against the former and larger game. If the states which countenance such a condition are not rotten, there is no such thing as political corruption. IX0ERSOL UN NAPOIKON. What Mis Thought Wer. While Viewing the Tomb. During a recent speech, Colonel 11. O. Ingeraol said: A little while ago I stood by the grave of old Napoleon a magnificent tomb of gilt and gold, fit al . most for a deity dead and gazed upon the sarcophagus of rare and nameless marble, where rests at least the ashes of that restless man. I leaned over the balustrade and thought of the career of the greatest soldier of the modern world. I saw him walking on the banks of the , Seine contemplating suicide. I saw him - at Toulon. I saw him putting down the (bob in the streets of Pais. I saw him at the head of the army in Italy. I saw him crowding the bridge at Lodi with the tri-oolor 'toy K hanu'. 1mw him in Egypt in the shadows of thw pyramids. I saw him conquer the Alps anVl mingle the eagles of France with the ekgler of of the crags. I taw him at Marengo, at Ulm and at Austerlitz. I sawf him in Russia when the infantry of tihe snow and the cavalry of the wild bla&t scat tered his region like winters withered leaves. I saw him at Leipsto in defeat and disaster driven by a million fclayo nets back upon Paris clutched lik e a wild beast banished to Elba. I skw him escape and retake an empire by tthe force of his gemua. I saw him on thU frightful field of Waterloo, whore Chance) and Fate combined to wreck the fortunes of their former king. And I saw him at St. Helena with his hands crossed be.', hind him, gazing out at the sad and sol . emu sea. I thought of the widows and orpha,ns he had made of the tears that had been shed for his glory, aud of the only woiman who ever loved him, pushed fron his heart by the cold hand of ambition And I said 1 would rather have been a French peasant and wore wooden sboea. I would rather have lived in a but with a vine growing over the doo and the grapes growing purple in Jflie amorous kisses of the autumn sun. A would rath er have been that poor peasant, with my . wife by my side knitting as the day died out of the sky -'with my children ' upon ray knees and their arms about me I would rather have been that man, - and gone down to the tongueleea silence . of the dreamless dust, than to have been ""thr '-imperial personation of. It was pathetic in the extreme, when one considers the loneliness of the miner, way out in the hills, deprived of the comforts of home and the joys of the fair sex. Bob Burdette writes as follows: My homeless friend with the chromatic nose while you are stirring up the sugar in a ten cent glass of gin let me give you a fact to wah down with it. You say you have longed for years for the free independent life of a farmer, but have never been able to get money enough to gether to buy a farm. But this is just where you are mistaken.
