A Sill AUDI K.
Scietiy Wiudom of Wall Streut if
uow the correct designation of the Min
uesots politician whom President Har
rison made member of his cabinet, and
who was, at the time, said to "represent
the vast interests of the growing ,Te8t,"
Ilia rucc-ut utterances on silver and hit
late decision on the lead question show
that he truly tries to represent the inter
est of the creditor classes of the East,
the bankers, brokers, and "money kings"
generally, and that he seriously, ma
liciously and studiously misrepresent'
the intercuts of the whole of the West,
including those of hia own state. Hi
attempt to get "on the fence" to appeal
only to desire to carry out the law as i
is, is too transparent to deceive thi
men of the West, What he aays in hi.
recent lead decision is, in effect, that
the onut of prosecution against custom
officers, (and the burden of proof,) lies up
on the miners of the United States.
That meant years of delay for us, during
which the lead market may, at far as it
would benefit us, be practically de
ttroyed. It it absurd for Windom to
dodge behind the words "commercial
sense" in regard to lead ores. Of cours
the lead ores of Mexico become "silvei
ores" in the "commercial sense," to tht
oaly people who buy them, just ta they
.( would become gold ores, or platinum
ores, or cream cheese ores, in the "com
merclal sense," if that were required to
lrait them free of duty. The financiei
from' Minnesota, (where, by the way,
t.iey are said to have eccentric financial
methods,) lives too late to be a merr.bei
of the Pickwick Club, but what a record
he could have made in that body in tht
use of the "Pickwickian sense !"
- Onr foreign born Americans arenlao ap
preciative of the, Secretary's grim humor. ;
at witness the remark heard yesterday
evening on the street: "Windy, old
ton, you been makin' boom for Presi
dent, but you try'n she now; she'll
bust.
This homely expression should repre
sent the feeling of every true Pacifit
Coaster, not merely with regard t
"Windy," who never could have re
eeived Republican nomination foi
President, but it should extend to every
foe of the American laborer in tht
West.

last week, but the young lady forgot
ball room etiquette and went to supper
with another young man. The former

one. The town boys sympathize with
the man who fired the pistol.
