St. John Herald. r . That slight cold, of which you think so little, may lead to serious trouble with the lungs. Avoid this result by taking Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, the best known remedy for colds, coughs, catarrh, bronohitis, incipient consumption, and all other throat and lung diseases. The cold snap of last week resulted in a shut down of Roe's small oopper f urnaoe at Bristol last Thursday. During the night the water pipes froze and the tuyeres melted allowing the heat to penetrate behind thi lining of firebrick, burning the furnaoe out Nearly two-thirds of the ore on hand had been run through and a carload of copper bullion is ready for shipment. Last night about 11 o'clock in Edward's saloon Toney Jacobson and James Giles had a slight altercation over a game of cards, when Jacobson pulled a pistol and began to shoot. The first was a premature shot, the ball entering the floor. Bystanders then jumped in and a second shot also struck the floor. The affair created considerable ex oitement at the time. Thus far no arrests are reported in the matter. The machinery at the Condor mill was put in operation last Friday evening and continued until about two o'clock the follow ing morning when the intense cold froze the creek solid and no water could be obtained. A he machinery was stopped and all pipes cleared without accident, and as soon as the weather moderates in this regard, a perms nent start on ore will be made. Mr. Kingsbury is said to have been in the iutereat of Montana capitalists and may return for another inspection later on. Mrs. Robert M. In the election at Salt Lake last Thursday to fill the vacancy in the Legislature caused by the death of Clarence W. Hall, C. S. Vsriun, the Republican candidate, was elected over Hall, Democrat, by a majority of 973, showing the city, under its new poli tical lines to be strongly Republican. Joe Conaway will return to Ferguson dis trict at once and resume work on the Gold Cup claim. He and Pat Ryan have been working there recently, a short distance west of their discovery poiut and the indi cations for pay ore are said to he first class. This property adjoins the April Fool Claim on the south and is regarded as good ground though but little work has been done on it. Monday night was the coldest of the sea son, the observatory showing 11 1-2 degrees below zero. It was destructive to animal life about town, two calves belonging to Peter Lynch being frozen, while a number of dead rabbits were found on the trail be tween here and the smelter. The cold wave was general and must have been hard on stock in the mountains. Arrangements are about perfected for the daily service between here and Milford. Mr. Klinger, route agent of the stag' com pany, is in town for that purpose. Stages will leave Milford daily, Monday's excepted, at six o'clock a. m. and arrive here the fol lowing morning at 8. In tho District Court at Reno, on Thurs day, Judge Cheney overruled the demurrer in the oase of the State vs. Marcus Fredrick questioning the constitutionality of the act making it a misdemeanor to give away ciga rette papers. The grounds of the decision were that where there is no open violation of the constitution, as in this case, the pre sentation must be in favor of the constitu tionality of the statute. Territorial Enter prise. Carson Appeal: Our typos put on over alls Sunday and cleaned out the office. After four hours' hard work they discovered a board floor, five monkey wrenches, a dozen press wrenches, a pair of pipe tongs, a pair of bellows, three roller moulds, a set of chases, fifty feet of lumber, half a dozen towels, an assortment of cast off clothing, an old musket, a few files, a hand saw, a oar- penter's square, a sledge-hammer and a kit of burgular tools. They expect to find an anvil and a forge to-morrow. According to the Colton, Cel., Chronicle the young ladies of Colton have struck a new and delightful game that is goihg to be all the rase this winter. It is called the "Onion Social," and is played as follows Six young ladies stand in a row; one of them bites a chunk out of an onion and the young fellows pay 10 cents each to guess, who bit it. The correct guessers kiss the other five girls, while the unsuccessful kiss the biter. It is unnecessary to state that the percentage in the game is in favor of the onion chewer. Ex. The Highland Brewery is about to resume operations under the management of John Jochimsen who has secured a lease on the premises and who will shortly begin brew ing. The place has been considerably im proved and next summer will make a better resort than ever on a short dri ve from town. Last Thursday eveuing a crowd of fiiends and acquaintances of George Williams at the lower smelter went down and treated that gentleman to a surprise. Sleighs were brought into requisition and a crowd of about three soore made merry in the Company house there till early in the morning, dauc ing, singing ahd otherwise amusing them' selves. F. W. Dickie was apprised of the affair before hand and saw to it that creature comforts were not lackiog. Though sting ingly cold the sleigh ridedown was enjoyable and all present voted the affair as ahead of the customary dance and one that would soon bear a repetition at some other place. Another important find is reported on the Monitor ground at Ferguson. The discov ery was made on the surface of what is pro perly the Cliff location and near the top of the hill above the Monitor tunnel. Boulders weighing as much as two tous and upwards re found to csrry gold to $40 or more to the ton. This ground is beyond the dis puted territory between the Monitor and the Jim Crow claims, but forms a portion of the ground on which S. T. Godbe holds his option. A knowledge of this discovery would undoubtedly tend to facilitate a sals. The Cliff ground has always been regarded as valuable but no particular work has bean done there until recently. Ltsj4 FERGUSON DISTRICT. Assays of $7 and $11 have recently been obtained from surface eroppings on the Minnesota claim owned by La wry, Devlin aud Osborne, and arrangements are made to begin work there next week. The claim lies about a mile east of the April Fool mine on the south slope of the hills and has a good surface showing. Work on the Flagstaff continues and while the mine shows up a no greater amount of ore than it did a short time ago, all indi cations lead to the belief that a valuable mineral deposit exists thereabout. Drift ing northward on the vein continues with an average on the entire face of about $7. A winze started at about this same point is down now some twelve feet, where assays of the entire ledge bottom show somewhat higher than in the drift above. In almost any other camp than Ferguson this would be regarded as a good proposition, but at Ferguson ore carrying less than $30 to the tou will not pay to mine and work, and this value would require reduction works some where iu the viciuity. Ten men are now engaged iu the work and the next thirty days promise to open up a valuable ora de posit. About 350 feet of tunneling and drifts have beeu run up to the present time. Southern Lincoln. H. W. Tnrner and Wni. Culverwell re turned Saturday from their second trip to the new gold finds in the southern part of the county. On this trip they landed at a point about eighteen miles east of the Vegas ranch where some gold bearing ledges have recently been located. Specimens are oc casionally found containing small quanti ties of leaf gold but these are rare. The find is something entirely new and no work has been done. Two shafts are cow being put down however and results will deter mine how long the work will continue. The urface samples brought back by the gentle men contained gold, but not in any great quantity. Another gold discovery is reported be tween the Vegas ranch and Eldorado canyon about twenty-eight miles from the latter place. The mountain ranges there abouts have been regarded for years as gold bearing but their situation renders it ex tremely expensive to prospect them. The Vegas ranch, still run by Mrs. Stew- art, is the general stopping place for all travelers in that section. About thirty wayfarers found themselves there at Christ mas tide and a general feast, with two or three days dancing was gotten up, at which their isolation from the world in general. was for a time forgotten. Mrs. Stewart is ever ready to care for strangers and the ranch is always a welcome sight after a pilgrimage across any of the surrounding deserts. The Nevada Southern, as projscted will touch at this point and when it does every mountain range in the vicinity will reoeive active and thorough prospecting. The Southwestern Mining Co. at Eldorado expected to resume work on the 1st inst. Everything was in readiness for ore hauling ten days ago and new wagons for this pur. pose were on the road then from the East. Of the wagons washed away by the floods of last August, only a portion have been re covered. School Entertainment. Friday evening's entsrtainment by the pupils of the school hare, both departments being well represented, will probably con clude our holiday performances, snd all the children have gone back to their studies again. The programme, whioh is too lengthy to reproduce here, was well rendered by all the children, the smaller members especially deserving great credit for the interest gene rally manifested. Recitations, dialogues, songs, etc., made up the programme. Miss Courtney, the teacher, sparing no effort (o make the affair a success. The musical por tion of the affair was under the guidance of Mrs. D. McDonald, and the children, one aud all were shown to have made material progress in this desirable accomplishment during the short time the lady has given them her attention. - ADVERTISED LETTER LIST. The murder of the two Litater boys at Boone Csnyon, Lander county, last week was, according to the report published in the Reveille, most unprovoked and coward ly. Two Vaughns and a man named Raat, who wsa with them when the murder was committed are in jail. The Ruby Dunderberg Mining Co., one of Eureka's old producers, has gone out of the business and its entire property will be turned over to bondholders. i W" f a tsl ' J I m wi sr f Teacher's Examination. The examination of applicants for teach er's certificates was concluded yesterday. Commencing Monday morning it 'was thought it would be concluded in two days but the questions sent down were too lengthy to admit of this. Five applicants presented themselves and all passed success fully. The examining board consisted of School Superintendent Wm. Culverwell, H. E. Freudenthal and N. P. Dooley. Follow ing are the names of the applicants and the percentages given: Belle MoArthur, of St. George, 93; Roxy Woods, Clover Valley, 88; Alice Fiuillay,' Panaca. 89; Nellie Wedge, Panaca, 87; and Lizzie Lee, Panaca, 88. The examination oovered the studies of reading, orthography, writing, written and mental arithmetic, geography, grammar, theory and practice of teaohiog current topics and physiology. A general average of 80 per cent in all studies was necessary in order to pass. This method of examination is superior in many respects to the old cus tom. Here no partiality is shown the ex aminations are thorough and better teachers is bound to be the result. Luka Skinner, a timberman employed at the Keystone mine, Tintio, Utah, fell from the sixth level to the bottom of the shaft, a distance of 200 feet, on the Sth, and was instantly killed. No one saw the fall but the station tender saw him approaching the shaft with a lighted candle in his hands, stooping over as if looking for something. A coroners jury returned a verdict of acci dental death. Reno Gazette, 2od: Ed. Collum, a labor er, was found dead in his room at the Pyra mid House yesterday morning.
