N)5 MAY CONFESS. Rivmide, Cal., J .ly 6 Before Join Hancock Roea to the gullowg in Curson, Navrtdu, aud pys the penalty of murdering two mining prospw.'tors, the authorities of Kiver ide believe be will make a coufea aion and clear up two murdera which bate beeu myateiiei for many years. He is under sentence to hang Sept pth. Mrs Hancock says be told her ha killed five other men before murdering the pronpectors. City Marshal Wilson is back from Pioche, where he went with the hope that Hancock would break the ileuce when the sentence of deuth was imposed. Hancock made do confession to him but he ia siiid to have assured the jail officials that when all hopi-a ii gone be will admit all the crimes ha is guilty of. Hancock made his home in River iide county for years. It was here he served bis first sentence. If it be true that he committed five other murders before killing the prospect ors in the desest, the police say bis viotims must have lived iu or ueur Biversid coun'y. At the time Hancock became in fatuated with the woman whose story ia Bending him to the gallows, ha w.iS just beginning his criminal eireur. Ui-til she told of the uiur dera Huucook wuh supposed to be only a petty thief. Eleven years a'O while Hancock was engaged in v tri ms kinds of thefts Uforge Porter, a wealthy S.tu Jjo.uto rancher,' left home, saying be was going to I'ortlui.d, Oregon, on s pleusure trip. Went a later his body was found iu a field off East Indiana avenue, in Riverside. He bad been rbbd of c uni h r hie iiu of tuuneyand shot si vi rui linn s The police never obtained any clew to bis murderer. In 1886 a French man's lif. Ic-sa body m us found cone-uld in a eluui of bushes in S.iuU Ana river b ottom. There was a bullet iu his brain, mid his hands and feet had bMti tied with rope. Tne body ha 1 been brought to the spot iu a wagon and dragged over the ground some dis tance. The identity of the tuuu waa never established and his mur-d-rers were never caught. The police have learned positively that Hancock was here at the time both crimes were committed. Be emse the character of the crimes is identical witu those Hancock is known to have committed and Mrs. Hancock' declaration that be con fessed five murders to her, the police are convinced that they have made no mistake ia charging the crimes to Hancock. A Senators Downfall. Tb jury in the cose of Senator Mitchell, charge with accepting bribes in connection with the Oregon laud frauds, brought in a verdict of "guilty." The jury re comnieuded bim to the murcy of the court. It seems inapporopriate, this recommed ition of mercy. Miiobell has been for years in the U. S. Snate as a law maker. His superior intelligence should have enabled him more clearly to have realized difference between bis duties as a servant and the policj of graft which he adopted. By reason of this he deserves a server punishment. A public fi ample should be made of men who reach high positions and who betray their trust and disgrace their con cousitueiits. ttii'ch-ll should be exspellod from the U. S. Senate and sent to the penitentiary. Appeal. Attorney Geueri.l Sweeney has bas rendered an opin ou to the effect that sheriffs are not entitled to any fees for collecting the State liquor license from adoou men. That the Fourth of July is be coming "sane" is indicates by the reiwrt that up to midnight July 5th only forty-six deaths were reportea as due to the celebration through out the country, whereas to the same hour of Independence day List year the number was forty-eight.
