E. 8BCLTON COMPANY ; Laaber ua Its Mitffi Large Amount 01 Criminal Work Taken Care of The' session of the District Court just terminated has beenj''t.r' a very strenous one for the ui - Hi.m": ficers directly concerned. Its! reauiis snow more convictions than have been gotten in a sin gle term of court in Lincoln county for a number of years Altogether there were eleven de fendants tried and eight con victions resulted, six of these were felonies. These results are encouraging, for tU uele mine the fact that the citizen sniD oi Lincoln countv have a proper regard for the enforce ment of the law and that the officers of . the law are deter mined to enforce them. This county cannot complain. however, for the number of her criminals , are comparatively small when the large amount of railroad construction and other work likely to attract this class of people is taken into consider ation. One of the most unfortunate cases and which elicits the most piety coming before the District Court this session, was that of young Chris Peterson. This is the case of a young man who as yet has scarcely attained his majority, though he is not a criminal at heart, is branded with all the stigma of the con firmed bad man. Peterson was accused of the theft of the sum of $1,300 from the railroad company at Caliente. while in their employ as cashier. lie entered a plea of guilty to the charge and then the Court, after taking into consideration all of the circumstances, inmosed the minimum penalty under the law. We most heartily agree with the expression made by the Court in passing sentence, that he regretted that Nevada did not have someTpenal institution for the punishment for first of fenders, for such a place is ab solutely needed for the reform ation of such offenders as Peter son. It is almost a shame that they must be confined with the hardened and 1 confirmed crim inals, for such associations, be it for the smallest lentrth of time cannot but have an undesirable effect upon them, unless they are able to evidence for stamna and manhood than falls to the lot of the great majority of man kind. Peterson possessed the facultv of making friends and was held in universal esteem by the en tire community of Caliente. He was initiated into the fast life and having no restraining in fluence thrown around him al lowed himself to be lead until he could not retrace his footsteps. As has been stated it is a deplor able incident and may its lesson be such that we will not again be called upon to witness it It is a matter of speculation in Pioche at present as to which will be the most important part of town.
