Temperatures were normal during
the frst half of the week, and a few
degrees higher than normal during
the later half. The highest tempera
ture at Reno was P0 degrees on
Monday, and the highest at Winne
mucca was 92 on the same day. Dry
weather continued, except in the ex
treme east portion, where scattered
thundershowors fell. The rainfall
was heavy at places In the extreme
south. Searcllight reported 1.76
inches. Modena, Utah, received 1.10
inches, and 0.BR inch fell at Tonopah.
The weathe was favorable for
having, harvertMng and thrashins,
and this work went forward without
interruption. Thrashing returns so
far indicate that wheat yields are not
' as good as tho appearance indicated.
A fairly good crop of barley has
been secured, and the second crop of
alfalfa was normal. There is suffi
cient water frr the third crop of al
falfa, except in the Walker river
basin, where practicallr all of the
wat.-r has been taken from alfalfa
and pasatures for use on potatoes in
an effort to save this important crop.
Potatoes continue in good condition,
but another month is needed for ma
turing them, especially in areas

baby tires of Ms rattle. Give him
the lid of a cWn whie box, or make
two slits and tie his rattle to it. It
will never cease to amuse him anew.
Do not forgjt the qual'flcations,
clean and whi'o. Then if he puts it
in his mouth I will do him no harm.
In his seco;d years the child will
enjoy the wholo box or several boxes,
which he can take apart. Also give
him a large lid, into which his toys
may be piled and turned out again.
The child o iwo or three years be
gins to want accessories. A string
attached to a box makes it into a
fine wagon or coach. No wheels are
necessary. Pulling and carrying are
the first activities suggesting them
selves to a Vld anil a little girl
likes a few covers with the boxes
such as clean cloths to make a bed
for dolly.
With the new experiences ofthe
fourth and fifth years which are go
ing to be reptoduced continually, the
box gains additional value. A half-
dozen boxes joined with strings make
a train, a few i-pools provide wheels
and a smokestack. A large box and
a few small o?ies make a tea table
and chairs. The painted engine and
the rail tea ti't.e may have lost their
charm. The ecx toy is your alter
native. At the Kindergarten age a pair of
scissors, at your suggestion and a
few paper fatners, which you help
adjust, awaken new possibilities.
Boxes of les3 stiff and heavy card-1
board are more adaptable to the
scissors. Wagons with wheels that
turn, or tablos and chairs with legs
are a result. One big box in which
to put the furniture serves as the
doll hOHse. The suggestions that fol
low the idea ct a "house for dolly"
will be amply forthcoming from the
children themselves.
With another and another year,
while hands grow better trained,
8 elves.
What I wish to impress upon you
who aia mothers or even you who
know children whose play materials
are limited, is the value of weighing
the "play-utllitv" of the article be
fore throwing it away. Do not dis
card things wl-Ich hold possibilities
for the training or entertainment of
your child. And save, at least, the
cardboard box.
