Surely giaTt lift* had some hard
knocks lately. But the desire to
g,U sonc-thing for nothing Is mighty
persistent. and Its elimination from
human nature may require a few
more ayes. New York Sun.
It Is to he feared that In spite of
the blue laws Boston Is getting to
he a wicked town. Visitors there
are warned to beware of the timid
girls who are afraid to cross the
Common after dark. The kind
heart'd straner who offers his pro
tectlon Is pretty sure to mourn the
loss of watch and purse Ja little
later.
Water has not touched Mnie
Patti’s face for 17 years. She holds
that water makes wrinkles, and for
her smooth skin th.’inks the cold
cream with which alone her facial
nblulatlong are performed. On the
other hand, Mrs. Corn wall Is-West
(Lady Randolph Churchill) Im
putes her splendid bloom to cold
water and to her repudiation of nl!
creams and cosmetics, which, she
claims, clog the pores and make1*
the skin dry and yellow.
A tailor, whoso firm has been con
ttnuously In business In Philadelphia
for years, has compiled fron
his hooks of measurement somo In
foresting statistics. These show that
the American In the past century
has grown taller, stronger and slim
mer—-greater In hlftht and in chest
girth, less in the girth of waist and
hips. The average chest of l 79r» was
3f> inches. It is 38 inches now The
average hight was five feet seven
Inches. It is now five feet 8 1-?
inches. The lenth of leg has in
cruised in the same | proportion
The shoulders and chest have great

other hand has lost two Inches.
Writing in the Koelner Zeltung
Prof. Kiaatsch of Heidlcberg say
that while examining some Austral
nslan natives arrested for killing a
whlto man !n Port Arthur, ho found
that oiio of t!ic men had foot and
hands of exactly th“ same shape and
apponram■« as thufco of monkeys.
TIi,. natives, on his inquiries, stated
that In the hitherto unexplored re
gions between the rivers Daly and
Victoria numerous people have simi
lar hands and feet, and otherwise
bear a strong resemblance to large
monkeys. This Is the first time
that these characteristics have been
discovered In a human being. Prof.
Klant-sch is now starting for the re
gion where these natives aro to be
found, in order to verify the above
statement. The discovery has
awakened great Interest In the Ger
man scientific world! ns It Is a
striking testimony In favor of the
Darwinian theory of the missing
link.— London Mall.
PUGILIST AND
COMPOSER
Over In Now York tho othor night
there was hold a benefit for a brok
en down, little prize flghter_ who
for years had not done a day’s
work except that. Involved in train
ing for encounters with othor bruis
ers The man had earned thous
ands upon thousands of dollars in
the art of pounding somebody else
into insensibility, all of which he
had squandered through tho dissi
pation of drink and othor sorts
of exercises.
Plainly the young fighter should
now he Independently wealthy, and
ho would be had he exercised even
tho common sense of a squirrel. In
stead, he is a battered and poverty
stricken derelict, and his friends—
with a loyalty for which others can
not help honoring them —arranged
a performance to help him, and In
ono way and nnother actually got
together It is said, $25,000 for his
maintenance.
Iii a little country town of New
(England there lives in poverty and
the pitiful gloom of a darkened in
tolled one or the greatest compos
ers this Western land has ever pro- i
duced. lie Is Edward MacDonald, ,
whose splendid orchestral works]
have delighted music lovers both
here and lu Europe. He labored
for years In the Interest of art at
salaries that never adequately paid
for his genius. But he gave freely
tho best there was In him, and that
best was glorious. Them camo a
mind diseased, and now there Is
hope only of a long and peaceful
twilight. A fund Is being raised for
him, too. hut with all the work of
a year or more It has not reached
the proportions of the prize fight
er’s reward.
Are the people who pretend to
love the “higher things” of life
b's's willing to translate that love
Info dollars and cents than those
who r<»Kard a “mlir* as tho hlght
of human enjoyment? They have
far more money In the aggregate
than those who rallied to tho sup
port of Terry McfJovern, hut they
have colder hearts. It Is a sorrow
ful commentary upon the nllerf'd
deslro for culture nnd the fine arts
In this ountry that men and women
all over tho land should not pour
In upon th« promoters of the Mac
Dowell fund all the money that the
stricken maker of beautiful music,
can over need. Certainly the “dend
game sports” have set them an ad
mirable example for liberality and
appreciation.—Washington Times.
WILLIE ON THE
FAMILY’S WISHES.
If pa rould only make ono wish and

I’ll tell It to you, too;

he’d wish that ho could bo

then, don’t you see,
Ho’d bo as great as Webster was or

And If ho was elected he’d be weal

If ma could have a wish—Just ono

She wouldn’t wish for wealth, al
though she does want money so;
I’ll bet she wouldn’t wish that pa
could alt upon a throne
And sho could wear a queenly crown
that would be all her own;
She wouldn”t wish that pa was groat,
so he could strut about;
Sho’d wish that she was twenty-flvo
years old and wasn’t stout.
If sister Geraldine could wish one
wish that gho could get,
The first tlmo that I tried I’d guess
what it would be. I’ll bet;
Sho wouldn't wish that sho could
have more beauty than sho’a got—
Because sho thinks she’s pretty now
•—I don’t say that she’s not—
She wouldn’t wish for lota of beau*
or any kind of sport;
She’d wish sho had a title and was

To study up the wish I d with—I'd

I wouldn’t wish I'd look so fine and
grand that everywhere
I ever had to go tho girls would

I'd wl«h I was the champion and
