I GI?4T3 FATH ER’S DUTY PKKSII»KNT KAYS IH>\VX RILKS OF (X)MK'<T POK THK FAMILY. Syracuse. N. Y., Feb. 12.—Mrs. K. H. Morrell, of this city, presi dent of the New York State Mothers' Assembly, Is In receipt of a letter from Presd**iit Roosevelt. In which he defines the places of the father and mother In the home. The let ter wag written In response to one ■ asking suggestions for the council of mothers recently held at Newburg and the State convention to be held In the fall. The President says: “For one of your topics, how wotild it do to speak of the place of the father in tho home? Now and then people forget that exactly ad the mother must help the breadwinner by being a good housewife, so the father in his turn. I If he Is worth his salt, must In ■ every way back up the mother in helping bring up the chldren. “After all, the prime duties are elements and no amount of culti-I vatlon, no amount of business force and sagacity will make the average man a good citizen unless that aver age man is a good husband and father and unless he is a successful breadwinner. Is tender and consider ate with his wife and both loving, and wise (for to be loving and weak and foolish l8 utterly ruinous) In dealing with the children. “I think it a crime for the woman to shirk her primary duties, to shrnk from being a good wife and mother. Of course, the woman should have the same right as the man to train her mind, to better herself, and occasionally a woman can, and ought to, follow some racial vocation in addition to (ncv I” substitution for) her home work. But Just as the highest work for the normal man is work for his wife and children, so the highest work for the normal woman is the work of the home, where, Heavn knows. i l the work is ample enough. But I also feel she can do the best work in her home if she has healthy outside interests and occu pations in addition, and I most firmly believe that she cannot do her full duty by her husband if she occu pies a merely servile attitude toward him or submits to ill treatment, at#l that Bhe is quite as bad a mother if weak and foolish as if hard and unloving. i i I i t DOOLEY ON WIVES AND HUSBANDS. No gintloman Bhud wallop hla1 wlfo, an’ no gintleman wild. I’m ' In favor lv havin’ wife beaters whipped, an’ I’ll go father an’ Ray! that ’twud be a good thing to have Ivry marrld man scoorged about wanst a month. As a bachelor man who rules entirely be love. I’ve splnt r>0 j^eara envestlgatln’ what Hogan calls the martial state, an’ I’ve come to th’ conclusion that ivry man uses vi’lence to his wife. Ho may not beat her with a table leg, but he coerces her with his mind. He can put a savage remark to th’ pint lv th' Jaw with more lastin’ efTect thin a right hook. He may not dhrag her around be th’ hair iv her head, but he dhrags her bo her sympathies, her fears an’ her nnxieties. As a last racoorse ho beats her be doin’ thingR that make her pity him. An’ th' ladies, Oawd bless thlm, like it. In her heart ivry woman likes th’ sthrong arm. Ye very seldom see th’ wife lv a hlbitrhooj wife beater lavin’ him. Th’ husband that gives his wife a vllot bokay is as apt to lose her as th’ husband that gives her a vilet eye. Th’ man that breaks th’ furniture, tips over th' table, kicks th’ dog an’ pegs th’ lamp at th’ iady of his choice is seen no more often in our justly popylar divorce coortfl thin th' man who comes home arly to feed th’ canary. Manny a skilful mandolin player has been onable to prevent his wife fr’m lopin’ with a prize fighter. PREMATURE. Are not these reports of a ruined peach crop a trifle premature? Why not first give us a chance to worry over the strawberry chop?—Wash ington Post. rtrito uo gift of whatever sutn can justify the condition that per mits a man to amase a fortune so colossal, there Is to be seen in vast $lfts like thig a mitigating quality of the evils which the accumula tion of vast fortunes produces. It suggests the Idea of trusteeship, and In a small way chares withe the generation from which the toll has been taken that makes the fortune. —Indianapolis News.
