Aurora, 111., Feb. 13—A telegram from Mount Pleasant, Iowa, says that Warren Beckwith wag granted a divorce from his wife, Jessie Lin coln Beckwith, today, the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, grandfather of Mrs. Beckwith. Judge Babb, of this city, appeared for Mrs. Beckwith. The charge of desertion, brought by Beckwith, wag proved by witnesses. By tho de cree of tho judge Mrs. Beckwith has tho custody of the children, Mary and Warren Beckwith. There !b no lallimony, and, both parties kept their own property. The defen dant is at her father’s winter home in Augusta. Cia. w It has been rumored that Mr. Beckwith will marry an Auroia young woman, but thlB hag not been confirmed. OLD DETECTIVE’S _ STORY James Atkins, registered from Denver and who says that he was one of tho great detectives of the far west a few years ago, was at one of the local hotels a dny or two ago. “Yes, I’ve known some slick ones In my tlmo,” said he In response to a question, as ho sat looking over a newspaper. “I suppose that about the nerviest scheme to avoid arrest that I ever heard of being worked by a crook was one that a fel low pulled ofT In a little town out west, about ten years ago, I guess It was. The trouble was that the scheme didn’t pan out entirely, but It ought to have. This lad was a sort of porch climber. One night he got Into a home while all tho family were down stairs, and proceeded to ransack one of the bedrooms. A man and his wife came up stairs to retire before he had time to get out of the room. He managed to get under the bod, though, and there he lay, afraid to breathe, almost. After he thought tho couple was asleep, he made a move to got out but tho bed *had sagged down with the weight of the occupants and he was so securely fastened that It was Impossible to move without shaking the two slightly. The wife woke up and told her husband that there I t I I t t ! i ♦ I t t t t ; t t ♦ ! wa* a man under the bed "No," said the husband, "that's Just tha dog and ho snapped his Angers at the dog. The man under the bed beat his hand on the floor to sound like the wag of a dog’s tall. BtUl the wife was not satisfied, and the husband had to call the dog over to him. The capttve under the bod crawled over all right and licked his hand. It was a lick for life.
