TWO VIEWS OF THAW TESTIMONY It is without any temptation to in dulge in false prudery, or to assume ] any undue virtue .that the Constitu- i tion announces it will discontinue i further publication of the testimony ' Involved in the trial in New York of Harry K. Thaw for the murder of i Stanford White. The recent test!- I mony in thig case has developed the ] fact that, expurgated or not, it is I unfit for publication in any news paper or periodical that circulates < in the homes and is read at the Are- i sides of our people. \ve cordially c indorse the movement on foot in I Chattanooga to hold a mass-meeting i tomorrow at which women, and men as well, will gather to protest against the further publication of the testl- I mony in this salacious case. They i are right. L,et them pass, with one voice, their protest against tho fur ther desecration of the home circle with stufT far worse than much of1 that for which many a publication has boon barred from the use of the i United States mails. And lot us hope * it will be hoeded. There is no ma- * terial difference between the details < of the Thaw case and those of any < umer vulgar intrigue which may be heard from time to time before al most any court the country over, with the single exception that there Is money Involved in it. Take that away and the Thaw case would lose every eloment of interest, even for the prurient and morbid. (From the Hartford Times.) We do not harbor the notion which a few people entertain that publica tion of the m..ln body of the testi mony in the Thaw case exerts a demoralizing effect on the public. The whole group of circumstances of which the White tragedy wa# the ^product is repellent* rather than at tractive. The glamor Is all gone.. What looked like the gold of enjoy ment at the time turns out to be the veriest dross. What poor and re spectable toiler at a factory bench would swap his humble place for such a life as that of White or Thaw, with all the money at their com mond? What second girl in any hon orable household would be willing to exchange positions with the wife of the slayer of Stanford White? Who, knowing what a whirlwind the par ties to the tragedy have reaped, would care to sow the wind as they sowed it? Removal of the lid from this pot of yellow morality and exposure of the nasty mess will not damage the public virtue, although it is likely to turn the public stomach. The case should inspire .wholesome dis gust rather than unwholesome ad miration.—Atlantic Constitution. U.L THE NEWS THAT’S NEW AND TItl’E. Kelton (Wyo.)
