Of the 14.693 in Ohio county 10.903 of them are in the city of Wheeling. It will he seen that Kanawha county has a greater enumeration than C'abell with Huntington and Wood wlih Parkersburg combined. The amount *r money Kanawha will receive Is likewise greater than the combined amount oT Wood and Cabell. The coal counties of Fayette and Mercer show a much greater enumeration than had been nutlet, pated by those not familiar with school statistics, yet neither of these counties have a seperate chool districts as have such counties as Kanawha, Wood. Ohio, Cabell Taylor Wayne, Marshall and Berk eley. ye, a nuniher of these are llot among the first twenty counties. The gross amount from the Feiieral School rund will he $6x*. ‘47.49 For the year 1907-1908, and the enumeration these figures are based on is 3 17,402. The Department of schools is preparing for the n-u teachers examination which Mr Miller says will have a greuter attendance than the May examination. When asked for a reason foi the great percentage of failure at ‘.’o' last examination Mr. Miller said that there were a great many veiy young people tried for certificate!!, many of whom had no «dea or teaching, and who were not old enough to handle a school even If they had passed. He said he doubted if that course was a g<V,done as it might tend to lower ,he standard of the examination. n,e next legislature may he asked to pass some legislature effecting such instances. A little over 32 per cent or thoe who took the last examination failed or passage. There were 26 applicants from one sc,IOO| Hjone a grea, many of whom probably took tlm examination jU«t what they could get in percentage. The coming oxamjnationg> (ho oi>inlon of Mr. Miller, whle it Is expected will have more applicants, will also show a smaller percentage of failure. 4 4 4 The charter business has not been a lucrative one thus nr this week, and are nearly allresident ons, empowered to do alums, nil kinds of business. 4 4 4 Kxcopt for the quietness that prevails In ,ho chamber the moet Of the stale Board or Health which is in session iu the House of •gules room, resembles a session of that legislative bodv.
