UTILE JEWISH UG i MAKES DETERMINED EFFORT TOO BECOME AX AMER ICAN (.TTIXEJT—HAS tltoKHKh OCEAN SEVEN TIMES AND EACH TIME SENT i -- - - Now York. Dec. 12.—If determi nation to become an American is a praiseworthy ambition, little Benja min Axelrod. 12 years old. Is worthy of all praise. Six times he has come o Amelia as a stowaway. Six limes he hag been reported. Re cently the lad arrived in sight of the statue of Liberty for the seventh time. The officials at Ellis island expected him, and greeted him as an old friend. Also, they will con •tlnue to send him back, unless some one comes to the lad's assistance. But little Benjamin is not discourag ed. Benjamin Axelrod is a little, under sized Jewish boy. He was born and raised in the little undersized town of Pechunka. In the little, undersiz ed Russian providence of Podelia. There were many other little Axel rods at Uomo. and not ulwaya did they have enough to eat. To Poehuuka. in Podolia. there I came storied of a great land beyond I the seas, where prosperity abounded, and where even little boys were able to earn more copecks than a full ; grown mau in the land of the Great , White Czar. In that great land—so : ran tin; tale—no one went huugry i to his bed. There brown bread and dried fish were unknown as steady articles of diet and—wonder of won dors—nil folk ate white bread at every meal. Such tales appealed to the starv ■ er stomach and the active brain of i little Benjamin. Ho would become t an American. He would make his , bisters fine ladies and his brothers rabbles. He would make a home for i hla father and mother in that great i land of peace and plenty—that land I whore none are persecuted because ; they cling to the faith of their fath ' ers. I Resolutely ho set his face toward , the setting bud. With a hamper of j food on his back, he trudged across ■ Lithuania. Prussia and other strange 1 lands, to Rotterdam. No obstacle was too great for little Benjamin. ; Where strong men would have fail * cd, he succeeded. He stowed hint j self away in the hold of a steamer, l and after the ship had 'left port vol unteered to earn his passage as a dishwasher. At Ellis island the determined lad found his first real difficulty. He hail no money, no friends or relative* to vouch for him. Therefore—so spake the atom official who represent e<J the strong arm of the lew in great America—therefore Beniamin Azel rod must go back to P<y*huUka T1V boy wan ♦placed on a returning steamer bound for Rotterdam. if any thought, however, that he would so easily give up his mission, they j reckoned without Benjamin Axelrod. A few weeks later the Ellis island beaurocrat again saw the homely eager faco of littlo Benjamin. Again he had stowed himself away, again he had earned his passage by honest toll as a <1 Is washer. Again the of ficial hardened his heart. Again he <ald. “Go back to Pochunka.’’ Again Benjamin went back, but not to Pe ehunka. Arriving at Rotterdam, he boarded the next American-bound steamer. How he eluded the keen eyes of the ship's men, who had been warned to keep a sharp lookout for a little, undersized Jewish lad, is | known only to Benjamin. Perhaps, i since the boy has become an expert ! dishwasher and Th a willing and able worker, the ship’s officers are not i averse to his presence. In any event j little Benjamin continues to come back. Thirteen times he has crossed the Atlantic in the last fow months. Back and forth he goes, a human I shuttlecock between Rotterdam and N'ew York, where tho statue of Lib erty blazes a welcome—to those who have the price. London in Her Glory.
