Washington, July 7.—Today's
convention In Denver Is properly
that of the country's oldest political
party, since the present Democratic
party claims to l>e the lineal de
scendants of the organization found
ed by Thomas Jefferson. In his day
It was known as the Republican or
Democratic-RepufMM’an party. The
first convention since the party as
sumed something resembling Its
present form was nominated by ac
clamation. The conventions of
184 4, 1848 and 18f»2 were, all held
in Baltimore, the presidential nom
iness being Polk, Cass and Pierce,
respectively.
Conventions held since that time
have resulted in the selection of the
following candidates for president
and vice president:

prominent member of the local bar
had a private conference in this city
and laid plan* for the coming pres
idential campaign. Roth men are
electors at large In the president In I
election and the outcome of the
meeting was the agreement that
they should stump The state. In the
Interest of the Democratic nominee
no matter who he should be. Judge
Williams will take this In the east
ern section of the state, while Kel
ley will go Into Judge Williams* sec
tion.

If a boy can mvopp a floor well
the chances are he. will succeed In
anything he feels capable of at
tempting. The process of sweeping
out the office, If done well, is a
test of thoroughness is a qualifica
tion the possession or which Is a
sure guarantee or attaining the de
sireil end. He who can get into the
nooks and corners with bis broom
is bound to keep clean the nooks
and corners of his business. He
will att( nd strictly to the most min
ute detail, and extend his efforts to
the remotest domains or bis enter
prise.
They tell a story of a young man
who came Into the office of a Phila
delphia newspaper and asked for a
job.
“What can you do?" demanded
the person in charge.
“Oh, I can either edit your paper
or sweep out your office," replied
the boy, with unoffending pleasan
try.
“Then go ahead and sweep out
the office," returned the other.
That was ten years ago, and to
day that young man, who was both
willing to sweep and able to awee.p
well, is editor of the newspaper.
Hooker T. Washington, whan he
applied for admission to a certain
school in the south was told by tfie
teacher that he would have to sweep
out the classroom. This was the
first school that young Hooker bad
ever been inside of, and he was de
termined to do well in order that
he might gain access to the advant
ages of the institution. He swept
that floor so thoroughly, and dust
ed the benches, ' window-sills and
walls so carefully, that when the
teacher came in and rubbed her
handkerchief on-the woodwork there
was not a particle of dust to be
found.

10 TEST BIRO LIQUOR
Richmond, Va., July 7. —The vali
dity of the Byrd liquor bill, the
most important of the lawn enacted
by the recent legislature., will he
severely treated when the judge In
the hustings court will tomorrow
take up the case of John G. Uln
ford. representative of a Baltimore
house. The case was presented to
the grand jury yesterday by Com
monwealth's Attorney Koikes. Bin
ford Is alleged to have been sent
here by the American Liquor heal
ers' Association The law prevents
him from selling liquor in Virginia
by sample unless he previously
took out a liquor license. Binford
openly violated the law and phon 'd
and asked arrest at the hands of the
police. in the lower court he was
fined $100 and the case Is in the
higher court on appeal. There is no
doubt, ns Binford makes the asser
tion, that If the hustings court Ik J
against him the case will Ik- carried
to the state supreme court of ap
peals.

Fluff ft lo, N. Y., July 7.—What will
beyond doubt no down in history as
th»» most Important good roads con
vention ever hold in America was
opened here t!»ik morning, when
M.i\or Adam delivered mi address
of welcome, to the hundreds of del
egates present. Although the meet
ing was called by the American Au
tomobile Association, and a major
ity of the visitors are motorists,
the farmers of the nation are also
represented by delegates from the
National Orange, and the profession
al road makers by members of the
American Hoad Makers* Association.
The inaugural session this morn
ing was under the direction of
Charles T. Terry, of New York,
chairman o ft lie legislative hoard of
Hie American Automobile Associa
tion. The present status of motor
vehicle legislation in the nation and
the various states was discussed
and plans made for united action by
motorists everywhere In favor of the
pending federal registration bill,
and motor laws In states not yet
possessing them.
The good roads convention wilt
be formally opened this afternoon,
witli Robert 1*. Hopper, of Philadel
phia, as chairman. The list of
speakers for this afternoon and to
morrow morning includes authori
ties on highways improvement fron^
New England to tin* Pa/’lfle const.
Practical demonstrations will he
given by professional road builders
tomorrow afternoon.

night with a banquet at the Iro
quois hotel, at whlrh several men
