The most heinous crime ever com muted in this section of the coun tvy was revealed at Welch yesterday at f> o'c’ock hy the discovery of the dead body of little Lou Stafford, a ten year-year-old white girl who had been mlasing since Monday. The body was found in some bush es In the courthouse yard, and th > strange part of the affair is that circuit court has been in session all week and people have been con stantly passing and no one had dis covered the child, notwithstanding searching parties had been looking for her ever alnce Tuesday morn ing. The mother of the chilJ bears an unsavory reputation, and the child was allowed to run about the str'ets more than was proper. The records of Mercer county show au actual Indebtedness against thv* county fund of $54,068.21. Hut the curious thing about th « matter is that one banking institution In Mercer couuty holds $63,064.58 in county warrants, with accrued In terest, which amounts to about $7,000. A good many people would like to know how this tnntt‘'r will be explained. The records should show the county’s indebtedness to a penny. It will be a startling state of affairs If It Is a fact that one banking Institution alone holds more that $10,000.00 in excess o* what the records show. But another startling thing Itat been discovered which is that for the fiscal year < tilling June 1, 1908. the county incurred $34,884.28 In excess of its Income. The total or ders Issued for vhe fiscal year < nd ing June l. 1908, amounting to $79,062.1 2.
