More novel than this, however, the office of public roads lias been prepar * lng in the east to lay a stretch of what facetious writers are almost cer tain to label a “candy” road. In nil flights of fuucy it Is probable that no body except n scientist would go so far afield In rosenrch as to adopt mo lasses us a road building material, but that is exactly what has been done ItOAD WITH HLAO FOUNDATION. Assistant Chemist Provost Hubbard of Director Page’s scientific corps has been leveling n half mile stretch of road near Newton, Mass., for the lay ing of the first molasses roud. On® of the Firct Essential® to Good H ighways. 'I he King drag Is no donbt u good tiling, but how about the wide tired wagon? Observe the dirt road after n thorough soaking. The farmer cannot work iu his fields, und. having some wheat, corn, oats or bogs to haul to market, the time to haul is while the fields are unfit to Is* worked, sav ing time by doing so. Ho loads ills product Into tils one and a half Inch tired wagon, 3.000 pounds or more, and probably hitches four horses to Ills load, and along the whole distance he cuts a rut from three to six Inches deep. Several of his ncigldiora do likewise, and som the road Is worked down to the con sistency of mortar a foot deep, says J. I*. Anderson of Agenda, Kan., In the Farmers Advocate. All observers will EFFECT OF NARROW AND WIDE TIRES. bear me out when I sny that if these tires had been four Inches or more the road would have been benefited rather than Unmnged. A wide tire un der a load mukes an observer think of a roller. I think this wide tire proposition is one of the first essentials to good ; roads and should be encouraged by legislation and a limit law for the amount of load for every inch of tire , width. If wagon tires were required to ho throe Inches or more for 2,000 pound loads und one additional inch for each added 1,000 or major fraction thereof, very much loss work would ho required to maintain our roads. —-— „ Try Daily Leader Want ads. --— Your Btomach churns and digests the food you eat; if found torpid, or out of order, jour whole system suf fers from blood poison.
