CLEVER WORK RY
COUNTY OFFICERS
DEPUTY SHERIFF BROWN AR
H^TS GEORGE ARTHUR AT
ELMKTON FOR MURDER COM
MITTED AT llELSPRIN'G.
Pu’asM News-Review;
Deputy Sheriff Sidney Brown, of
New River, came to Pulas«i last
n-Kht on No. 13 with George Arthur
who he arrested at Hi list on chanced
with the murder of one Gussie John
i son whose bojy was found in New
Kiver near Helsprlng on the 17th
: of last month and it was then su|v
posed that the perpetrator of the
crime would never be known.
Arthur’s arrest was the result of
some very clever detective work by
Sheriff Brown and Magistrate John
M. Brown, of Belspring, who have
been quietly working on the case
lor the last three weeks.
It seems that the Johnson woman
was last seen alive at Pepper on
Sept. 4th In company with Arthur
with whom he had left ShawsvMle
several days before. Then no trace
of her is found until later on she
was identified as Uussie Johnson,
the murdered woman found near
Belspring.
After tracing the affair for sever
al days Deputy Brown learned of
the woman's relations with Arthur
who meanwhile was seen with a
considerable amount of money and
a pistol which he told belonged to
the Johnson woman. After the wo
man’s death he told a number of
different stories about the money
to different parties and finally Mag
istrate Brown and Deputy Brown
went to Shawsviile and Elliston
where they Becured sufficient evi
dence against Arthur to Justify his
arrest which was made Tuesday and
the prisoner is now lodged in the
Pulaski Jail to aw-ait tho action of
the next grand Jury.
The murdered woman was the
daughter of a man formerly of Blue
lleld known as Bill Ed Johnson who
..as been dead for a year or more.
The daughter leaving home some
time ago with what money she had
to “see the world” and was known
to have about $200 Just before she
disappeared and the theory now is
that Arthur, who has an unsavory
reputation, killed her for the money
and threw her body into the river.
It is supposed that the crime was
committed at the mouth of the tun
nel about four miles above Bel
sprlng and that the body was
washed down the river until caught
by the bushes where it was found.
The commonwealth will produce
much circumstantial evidence that
will weave a condemning chain
about the man now in Jail.
"Every man to ms trade" la ai
old adage and la familiar to nearly
all of tie. It la brief In Ita wording
but conveya a great deal In Its mean*
Ing. It Is merely a terse way of
laying that a man who makes a spe
cialty of any one thing knows more
about, and Is more proficient In his
particular specialty than any one
else could be. It Is for this reason
that we all seek a specialist when
*'e have any serious physical all*
ment. It Is for the same reason that
Tho Rydale Remedy Co. went to one
>f the beat specialists In the United
States on liver and Intestinal trou*
bles, a professor In a Columbus, O.,
Medical College, and secured from
him a prescription from which Ry*
dale’s Liver Tablet* are made.
This specialist knew more about liv
er troubles than a doctor who treats
ail diseases, and that Is why Ry
dale’s Liver Tablets relieve and cure
more quickly all liver troubles than
the ordinary liver pills and pow
lers.

FUND ON PAIN OF DISMISSAL.
THREE GIIiI>i FIRED FROM

CAUSE THEY REFUSED TO
CONTRIBUTE.
Driven to desperation by the ap
parently approaching defeat of their
ticket the Republicans of West Vir
ginia are stopping at nothing. They
are determined to stem the tide no
matter what be the cost. To do 'his
if they are indeed able to do it at
all they must have money and they
are not well fixed In that I’.ne just
at presen'. So they are soliciting
from everybody and wherever it is
possible that are backing their so
licitations with threats.
It has for some time been well
known that state employes have
been required to donate to the
teasury of Duke Elkins' campaign
committee five per cent of th«#ir
yearly earnings. Fear of losing out
is paramount in state office holding
circles and of course too state
house employes and the like con
tributed without murmuring wheth
er they were able to do so or not.
In assessing the state women have
not been excepted but for all of
this almost the whole state has been
surprised, not to say shocked, on
learning of the fact that even the
female attendants at the state hos
pitals have been assessed.
At Weston and Spencer asylums
the girls and women who attend the
sufferers and who are pa'd by the
wtate have been nss«used the regu
lar five per cent and more than that
the payment is compulsory. Three
young indies at the Spencer asylum
objected to thin method of proven
ure and refused to have th. lr earn
ings cut short for the benefit of m
cle Steve. They were fired. Abso
lutely without compunction they
were turned from the hospital, not
because they had been remiss In
their work, not for any good reason
Simply because they refused to con
tribute to the campaign fund. The
good people of Spencer, by subscrip
tion are declared to have raised
money and sent these girls home.
There 'is much indignation in the
Roane county town ns a result of
the affair.
In Wes to ii where the same tac
tics as were employed at Weston
were used no girl refused to pay
bo far as Is known but It Is known
that the assessment seriously
straightened the finances of at least
one lady attendant. This girl was
met on the streets of Wertton not
many days ago by a friend 01 hers
who percelvt d that she w as weep
ing. The friend asked what the
trouble was and the girl told. On
the day before she had gone to a
store and ordered a tailored suit
for wh'ich she was to pay twenty-five
dollars and when she returned to
the hospital she learned of the as
sessment. Realizing that lie could
not pay for the Hult after having
five per cent of her year’s wages
taken out of one month's salary
she was then on her way to cancel
the order.
At the West Virginia a vium the
assessment, though it lias b on made
was much lighter. Several of the
female attendants at the lo^al insti
tution have confided to friends that
they had been made to pay one dol
lar each to the campaign fund of
the Republican party. None of the
girls objected to this op nly but
several of them realizing the Injus
tice which is done secretly resented
it very much.—Huntington Adver
tiser.
