HOLT .AND, Mr. Rt owivelt f alls (jumpers Mr. | Bryan's ally ami praises the worn which Mr. Knox, the steel trust has performed in the Interest of labor. The letter Is pronounced as the last desperate card to be played by the Republican party. If campaign contn'butlons were given in strict accordance with ben efits derived from the party In pow er Andrew Carnegie would give $20,000,000 to the Taft fund and great common people would walk right up to the treasurer of the fund and demand a return of some of their money glutted by Andrew under the protective tariff law. President Roosevelt has Just made a bitter attack upon Hon. W. J. Bryan, Democratic candidate for president and Mr. Samuel (Jumpers, president of the American Federa tion of Dabor. Mr. Roosevelt has adopted the methods more akin to a ward poli tician than the attitude of a chief executive. Hon. Samuel E. Bowen, of ■Charleston will address the Blue field Democratic Club tonight at the Bailey building. Mr. Bowen n an eloquent speaker and Blueftold in very fortunate in being able to se cure him tonight. He will give es pecial attention to some false state ments made In this portion of the state by Delegate Uummell. Mr. Bowen was chairman of the Demo cratic executive committee of Charleston, which defeated the Hogg combine. He is one of the best posted men In West Virginia on state Issues. Collier's Weekly, for this week, although it is making a strong tight for Taft for president, says to all its readers; Even if you do not live in the Danville district you can vote against Cannon by refusing to vote for any candidate for congress who does not promise to oppose the speaker for re-election. This is a good enough issue for the Democrats of the Ninth a.id Fifth districts of Virginia. Mr. Cannon is an active obstructionist, the tyrant and master of the party claiming to be the party of progress. He has done more than any man that ever lived to abolish the house of representatives as a body ex pressing the wishes of the people and to make It a machine to per torm his will. A vote for Bascomb Slemp or for Mr. Barsons Is a vote for .Joe Cannon, a vote for Byars or Saunders is a protest against Mr. Cannon. The house of representa tives is likely to be very close after this election. The liberty loving V rginians in either of those dis tiicts would dislike very much to leel that they had contributed the one or two Republican congress men to continue Cannon in power. —Richmond News-Leader. A vote for James A. Hughes is likewise a vote for Cannon. I he sentiment of Southern West Virginia, as indicated by a straw vote upon an N. & w. passenger train coming out of McDowell coun ty yesterday evening, a sTnall body or men were waiting at Blucstone •function for No. 10, the east bound local when some one suggested pol iilcs, whereupon a straw vote was taken resulting in a vote of 12 for Bryan and « for Taft. After hoarding the train which came along in a few minutes .t was deeded to take a vote of the entire >raln even thoi/gh a negro band of 2 2 pieces were on board coming to Bluefleld to make music tor rather judging from the discord In the in lisle to lend a hand to the Bluefleld Republicans) so a Bryan and also a Taft man was selected to take a straw vote of the entire train, the result of which showed a vote of o3 for Bryan and 41 for Taft. This Included a full vote of ‘he .22 negroes composing the same number of pieces <n the band, whlc.i | stopped Jhe music immediately upon i hearing of the vote being taken, land each negro held up his hand ! -aying. ‘ I is for M4stah Taft, of course, cause he set me free.' The j laft man taking the vote hurried I ’hroiigh as fast as possible at least | by the negro band, saying, "I am only a Republican for Taft; I am or the state Democratic ticket.’* To the Voters of Mercer County: I desire to announce that If I an elected county assessor I will ap point Mr. J. The slate Federation of Irnbor or West Virginia met at Clarksburg on last Tuesday and passed without ob jection a ringing resolution endors ing the policy of Mr. Gotupers and sent him a message of greeting. Mr. Roosevelt writes this letter of demonstration to one Philander C. Knox, the attorney for the steel trust. I'rilon labor knows the steel trust They remember the Home stead Btriku. They know their friends without being instructed by the president. The latest pronunelamento of the president shows the desperate straits of the Republican party. Mr Roosevelt recently made an attack upon Foraker, Haskell and others anent certain relation with Stand ard Ol!, and its subsidiary holdings. But investigation showed the hy pocrisy of his runtings. He it was who had granted the Prairie Oil and das Co. franchise, lie it was who had written to “My dear Harrlman, you und I ure prac tical men.” He -it was who induced “My dear Harrlman” to “put up” *260,000, It was Theodore who named Judge Taft as Republican candidate for president, and la now using the patronage of the adminis tration to elect him. He tells the luboring ma.i that Judge Taft la their friend. He tells them they have no right to a tr al by a jury for Indirect con tempt In labor disputes. He writes a trust lawyer commending h n for what he has done for labor while he denounces the president of the American Federation of Labor. The laboring yian can easily choose between .Mr. Gompers and Mr. Knox. He will choose between Mr. Bryan and Mr. Taft. llKPl’HLK’AN RIOTKItS. According to the Bluefleld, W. Vu., Leader, which is doing .excel lent service for the Democratic pain ty on both sides of the state L ne/ Republicans of the Ninth Virginia district are using disgraceful tac tics. The Leader says that Mr. Slemp, the Republican nominee, de clined to meet his Democrats- op ponent, Mr. Byars. n joint debate anywehere hut In Tazewell or Wise counties, in each of which the Re publicans were assured of a large majority of the crowd At the W.sr county meeting the Republicans had liquor in abundance They became very disorderly and violent, inter rupted Mr. Byars continually and tn'ed to howl him down and prevent him from speaking. We hope every man who t >o< part in this outrage against free speech and fair play feels thorough ly ashamed by now and in a mood to indicate his penitence by voting for the man who was insulted and denied a hearing. Certainly every Democrat in the district and in the state should be thoroughly aroused by the incident and should go on outpost and missionary duty imme diately. It is no uiw for the Taze well Republican and other Repub lican newspapers to talk of Demo cratic unfairness and trickery five years ago in view of the kind of thing their own party is doing this very year.—iRichmond News-Leader PANIMDATK DKFINKA IIIS POSI TION. In ht« speech at Wheeling? Mon day night, Mr. Qla^irock, said: They say that t. ey wan to dis franchise the colored people. Do yon believe the law can be caact ed which says the negroes are here by disfranchised ? ‘‘A law disfranchising the negro at the same time d sfranchises a large number of whiten. The Re publican party herself cannot af ford to sail under false colors, and I myself will not do it. Listen to this. There are five southern states In the union where an effort has been made to disfran chise the negro. They cast 3,700 votes less than West Virginia and those five southern states have 4fi electoral votes while the state of West V rginla has seven. Why Is 't If the people ought to rule, that Mr. Bryan don’t go Into these states and preach hin doctrines to those people that have not the right of franchise, I am opposed to the dll franchlsement of the negro and like wise of the white man. Many In this county had not the privilege of education when they shouldered ‘he r muskets and went to the de fense of their country. I would not do anything as governor to disfran chise the old veterans, who are now nearing the close of life.” Does not Mr. fllasscfick know that tbe proposed franchise law of ihc Democratic party is so framed • ha* It will not disfranchise any white man of good character? M«* Thoroughly mlsunderstan is southern character, if one may Ju.ige by his utterance.; at several places in the south in the last two days. The cold necessity and stern determination of the white people of thin section to maintain Anglo Saxon supremacy he characterized n his Louisville speech as nothing more than “prejudice and tradi tion." in the same speech he pat ronizingly granted, however, that "the south is a part of the Union, and as such is eutttled to be con j sidered." More insulting reference front a distinguished source was never made to people who produced Washington. Jefferson, Davis and Lee. He asks our suffrages. On what ground? Hear hint. Speaking to the people of Ken tucky, he said: "I congratulate you as a state that you are gradually sliding Intj the Republican party in order that you may have the influence that you ought to have in the councils of the nation. For as long as you con tinue to be a part of the solid Houth, to be counted upon always as a taU to the northern Democracy, you would be certain not to exercise the influence that you did tin the past, and that you deserve to exer cise In the future.” Language such as Mr. Taft us >a might more properly be addressed to recalcitrant Filipinos. It doesn't lall pleasantly on wliite ears. In effect, Mr. Taft bids for our sup port on this commercial basis: ^ "Forget your civilization, your l*ast; trust the Republican party to insure your white supremacy; for get that the negro is an ever-present menace; come to us for the loaves and fitches; sell your birthright for a -mess of pottage; be a moaey niaker.” But Mr. Taft’s crowning Insult is thus related; While Taft was speaking in a crowded hall at Shelbyvllle tonight there were perastent cries of "Bry an". The Judge referred to the in terruption pleasantly at first, but as t continued, he declared: "It is just such instances as this which show why it is that the Dem ocratic party never gets control of the government. It has elements In It which lack the slightest sense oi respectability, decency or cour tesy." That any man of plain, ordinary' ntelMgence should attempt to leave the impression that hoodlumisin is restricted to one party, or one sec tion, is almost unbelievable. There is no danger of Taft win ning t lie south. He’s harmless down here.—'Richmond Journal.
