Washington. Oct. 27.—Replying to President Roosevelt's letter to Senator Kook, In reference to the publication of the writ of Injunc tion in labor disputes, Samuel Oorn pera, president of the American Fed eration of Labor, in a statement Is sued yesterday, rigorously arraigns the president for what he terms *'a change of position of at least ap parent friendship to bitter Indefen s ble antagonism." “It has been my pleasure," M.r. Gompers says, “to hare often had the privilege of discussing with (President Roosevelt a number of fundamental questions of right. Jus tice. and moral and social uplift, included in these discussions were the invasions of personal rights and human liberty by the courts In the injunction abuse. It Is true that the president has not always fully agreed with my contentions, but he has nerer until the publication of his latest utterances hluted, much less charged, that anythlug which I advocated was lawless, unfeeling, despotic, brutal, of wicked; and yet the rights for which the workers of our country contend and which, as best us I can, I defend and advo cate, hare been as well known to him during the past several years as they are when he now so un Justlfledly undertakes to misrepre sent my work, my motives and my law-abiding citizenship. Surely, that opinion was not always enter tained by the president. Mr. Uompers says that last Feb ruary he sent Mr. Roosevelt an is sue of the American Federatlonlst in which was published the chapter “Some equivocal rights of labor" from George A. Algor's book, "Mor al Overstrain." "The chapter of the book” Mr. Gompors says, "is us keen criticism of the courts of the country iu their decisions affecting the rights, inter ests, and liberty of the workors as anything I have ever said or writ ten.” The president in acknowledging receipt of the articles sent the fol lowing: "The White House, ^Washington, Jan. 27, 1908. "My Dear Mr. Compere: You may be amused to know that I have sent copies of the 'Moral Overstrain’ to Justices Day and McKenna. 1 am glad that you were able to use It in the American Federatlonlst and thank you for sending me the copy of the magazine. "Hincerely yours, "THEODORE ROOSEVELT. To Mr. Samuel Gompers, president American Federation of Labor, Washington, D. C. "The fact of the matter," Mr. Gompers declares, "is that President Roosevelt, having made Injunction Judge Taft the candidate of the Re publican party for president, and seeing that the ‘labor vote' Ib now aroused and determined to deliveT its own vote, that the tollers will not be cajoled, deceived or brow beaten, has become desperate and angry, and In hl» auger, by ‘‘.he womt exhibition of deinagoglsm, tries to Instill into the employers and business men the fear that their property and business are in danger if a ‘square dual,' implied by equal ity before ths law and human free dom is accorded to the workers with all other citizens. It is an exhibi tion of impotent rage and disap pointment, and an awful descent from the dignity of the high office of the president of the United States. No one but himself will be deceived as to the purpose of Mr. Roosevelt. "The workers and liberty-loving citizens are aroused as never be fore since *«1. The battle cry. for freedom Is again taken up. Then it was for the Union and the abolition of black slavery; today It is for the Union, equal rights, and freedom for ALL.” Mr, Gompers insists that the president "makes a direct and spe cific attack on labor,” in bis let ter to Senator Knox. "The pretense that the attack Is upon me Is too thinly veWed to de ceive any one,” be adds. “He strikes ! over rny shoulder at tho hearts of . the great rank and file of the work ers and other liberty-loving citizens of our country. So far as I am con cerned, I have neither the incl.na l lion nor the desire to bask in the sunlight of president Koos»Arelt's ‘benevolent assimilation by wtfiloh hs placates some, by the filg Stick, browbeats others, and by his sophis try hopes to fool the masses Into support ng Injunction-Judge Taft. "President Roosevelt say* that Senator Knox has a peculiar right to discuss the principles Involved In Injunctions because he as attorney g< neral prosecuted a civil suit for damages to an injured workman. That f4enator Knox was the special counsel of the Pennsylvania 1UH uad ai.J the United States Steel Corporation would Indeed qualify him to discuss the Injunction abuse, but certainly from the viewpoint of the friends of the corporations who profit by the abuse of the Injunc tion writ, as it brings advantage and profit to corporate greed and pow r. “If the courts have not invaded human liberty, if they have not un dertaken to protect corporate Inter ests to the detriment of the people, why did President Roosevelt char acterise) Judge Crosscup's reversal of Judge Landis' 929.UOO.OOO fine upon the Standard Oil trust as a gross miscarriage of justice?’ Declaring the “the veriest tyro of a layman in his wildest dreams never suggested the abo.ltlon of the Injunction process,'* Mr. Gom pers Insists that labor desires to have the injunction restored to the use “from wh ch it has been ruth lessly diverted, from the protection of property rights to the iuvusion of personal lreedom.” Ho quotes from the president’s messages to congress and declares that they “show an ut ter confusion of the eutlre matter of Injunction is Mr. Roosevelt's mind.* He claims that the decisions of the lower courts in Great Britain, which were reversed by the higher courts there, have beeu accepted as the basis for the Issuance of the injunc tions in the United States. Mr. Qompers also insists that the provis ions of the Pearro and Wilson bills, advocated by the Federation of La bor, are not as broad or comprehen sive in scope as the British Trades D.sputes Act. iuc mere mci CUUIIUUUB Gompers, "that Mr. Roosevelt de nounces a proposition us wlckeJ does not so constitute it; time nnd circumstances and party obligations have persuaded him to modify his judgment ami his utterances. Sure ly, it must bring unct on to him to find his unwarranted attack on me so thoroughly appreciated by the New York Sun, which characterizes him for his past utterances in uh severe language as that with which he now attacks me.” Referring to dissenting opinions of Justice Harlan, Justice Moody, and many distinguished jurists and legal authorities on the abuse of the injunction he declares that Mr. Roosevelt has "placed me in good company.” "Of course,’ ho says, "everyone knows that the president 'strongly' urged every measure which ho ad vocates, and then accepted what his political opponents in his own par ty chose to g ve him. It is gener al knowledge that he had a more liberal platform prepared for adop tion by the Republican convention at Chicago and then accepted what they doled out. All know that the nomination of Mr. Sherman for the vice presidency was concocted by Senator Burrows and ‘Ooneral Un do’ Joe Cannon as a slap in the face to Mr. Rtjpsevelt; but the pres ident because his Injunction-Judge Taft, has been nominated for the presidency now not only swallows the whole pot pourri but must needs directly and indirectly attack me In /the fight which my fellow-workers and I are making In defense of equality before of the law, of the men of labor with all other citizens, and for the establishment of human freedom.” Mr. Gompera asserts that the “Pearro injunction bill, which Mr. Roosevelt attacks, has been before several congresses without a word of criticism or comment from him, and scouts the suggestion that “Mr. Mitchell and other labor leaders’’ arc not In sympathy with him In his advocacy of the Pearro and Wilson Injunction bills. “John Mitchell, Frank Morrison, and I are now on'tr al to show cause why we should not be sent to jail because we exercised our con stitutional rights, hiving violated no law of state or nation,' says Mr. Oompers. “Will the president publicly Justify Justice Gould’s In junction and the contempt proceed ings to send M tcliell, Morrison and me to Jail on the grounds for such contempt which are put forward by the Buck’s Stove and Range Com pany under that injunction? The injunction Issued by Justice Gould is based upon Injunctions issued by Judge Taft and Judge Taft's lan guage iB quoted by Justice Gould. “It Is the purpose of the oppo nents of labor to vllllfy tlie labor movement through me and Mr. Roosevelt now Joins the chorus up on the pretext that I have attack ed the federal courts. As a man and as a citizen, I have nothing to retract; but I Insist that despite great provocation I have always ex press d my views and criticisms perhaps in strong, yet respoci'ul language.” WUXI A MM* KIDXKY PI f jIX Have you negfected your kidneys?
