Britts, ibe young white man wanted
in connection with the killing la**
on the Craig aide o’ tue Roanoke
county line, was captured Monday
night near the scene of the crime
by Sheriff Caldwell, of Craig, and at
once carried to the county jail ai
Newcastle, where he is now con
fined.
Sidney Britts, a brother of the al-,
leged slayer of Gorman is atlll at
large.
Sheriff Hatcher, of Koanoke coun
ty. who res.dea at Salem, yesterday
received a letter from Caldwell, of

Britts was in the Craig county pail.

The son parlor of hit* homo turned
Into a temporary telegraph and
newspaper office W. J. Bryan last
night watched the returns with
manifest interest. Ho was, howev
er,. perhaps the most unconcerned
among those who had assembled to
learn the people’s verdict. Mr. Bry
an divided hit time between the sun
parlor and his library, where ho got
special reporta from state chairmen
and the national committee and
frequently came upstairs and read
aloud the reporta he had received.
The returns from New York, par
ticularly from up state precincts
were of unusual inverest to the can
didate, who declared that the Dem
ocratic Increase over the vote of
1904 waa about what had been ex
pected. He made many Inquiries
regarding the result In greater New
York and Ohio.
At Interval during the early
hours of the day( Mr. Bryan would
come Into the sun parlor and chat
freely with the correspondents, an I
by way of amusement he brought
lout a number of telegrams of the
"freak" kind which he had re
ceived, giving him { -- -

While waiting for the detailed re
turns, Mr. sod Mrs Hry..n entertain
ed a large company at dinner In
honor of the correspond nts who
had been identified with his cam
pa gn and who accompanied him on
his various tours. The elec Ion for

In the drawing room and Mr. Bryan
treated them to a concert on the
pianola, the instrument being ma
nipulated by himself. After r<s ing

the returns. His daughters, Mrs.
Leavitt and Miss Grace, and son,
William, were among the group In
the sun parlor and spent, most of
the evening keeping in close touch
with the situation, wiille Mrs, Bryan
wa« content to occasionally come In
to the room, aHhougn the candi
date kept her thoroughly posted on
the returms.
At 6:16 o'clock Democratic head
quarters in Chicago Inquired of Mr.
Dryan what personal Information
he had and he replied that It was
to the effect that the Democrats
•ere making galna where they were
expected.
The press and other bulletins g v

Mr. Bryan In hit library, where he
had gone after remaining upstairs
for a short while. Ho read them
carefully, hut made no comment on
them.

Elaborate preparations had been
ma le by C. P. Tuft for the best tel
egraph service possible. One wire
was directly connected with Repub
lican headquarters in New York
and three others brought in news by
the Associated Press and other sour
ces. The first nows Judge Taft re
ceived was over the long distance
telephone fkom his friend Judge
Fisher, at Jamestown, N. Y., and
was to the effect that Jamestown
had given Taft 2,000 majority.
"What hue pleased me more than
anything else up to this time," re
marked the candidate shortly after
7 o’clock, "is that undoubted Influ
ence of Yale ,n Connecticut. Wo get
Connecticut by 30,000, and Hart
ford by 3,6U0.
President Roosevelt carried this
city by 15,000.
Cha rman Hitchcock was heard
from as early ns 1.30 o’clock. He
said :
"Hearty congratulations on mag
nificent vote."
James H. Sherman followed Mr.
