STILLMAN AX1) HOOSKVKLT. I’res deut Roosevelt lias given proof of his annoyance over the publlcat on of a report that Janies Stillman, president of a bank known n Now York as the ‘ Standard Oil Dank," is prrncipai stockholder in tho Outlook, the magazine to which the president u to become a “contrtbut ag editor.” The publish ers assert tnat their magazine is io‘ a public service corporation, and that the public tma no right to de ninud to know what proport on of the stock la owned and controlled by Mr. Stillman. Mr. St I lrnan is n Paris, and will no doubt see the importance of saying someth ug on tho subject. Tho frieuds of Mr. Roosevelt will, of course, pooh-pooh the auggeatlon tnat ho know anything about the magaz no being controlled by a man connected with tha oil trust when lie signed a contract to become one of its editor al writers. But they will bo forced to admit, la view of the recently published Archbo'd letters, that tho Standard haa taken similar steps to 'laflueace public opinion. A TRIBUTE TO DECENCY. The victory of South Dakota's uow divorce law. which the official count hag at last established, la a victory of decency. In the paat the state has been a favorite camping ground for coarae-bred persons to whom the marriage ties were not niorely unpleasant, but boringly In convenient. says the Courier-Jour nal. A six month'* residence ;n the state and the married person could procure his legal separation with tiie oxpedit on of a lightning change artist. There sprang up what was fnnilliany called "South Dakota's Divorce Colony." I»orce la the s'ate uecamo a branch of commerce t whs one of the leading industries Jt the place. It paid. It paid so veil that when the moral sense of oms of the people began to assert itself and the recent legislature parsed a law requ ring a year s res •lence there came a protest from he commercial army. Hotelkeep *rs, real estate dealers and divorce lawyers demanded—as was provld d by the Dakota constitution—that he new enactment be submitted to he people for approval or rejection, t was a red-hot campaign, tho mor al element on one side and ths vul gar commercial element oa the oth ®r. The moral element of ths rest of ths country congratulates the ■ roral element of South Dakota oyer s success. The divorcs factories of ths state may at 11 be patronized by, rebellious spouses, and the hote’ -eepera, real estate agents and di vorce lawyers may y«t make a liv ng but the traffic will be lees bra zen. That state has paid it* trib ute to the sanctity of marriage.
