When Grover Cleveland refused to aign the Wilson tariff bill after It had been butchered in the senate until It boro little resemblance to th* original draft, and carried with It but little fulfillment of the prom toe* made by the party in its plat form and in Bpechea, he character ised It as a work of “party perfidy aim dishonor " When the Aldrich tariff bill finally passes both houses of congr«*ss and goes to the President, will he refuse to sign It for the same reason? In a recent •l*»ech he warned his party that unilees its promises were fulfilled the people would arise and relegate It to thu minority once more. For shameful extravagance, humble sub servience to the “Interests" and broken promises, it deserves rebuke. The Parkersburg Sentinel well says: Thu Aldrich tariff bill is almost ready to report to thu Senate. A little more tinkering and It will be ready to pai«*i. Anj In Its almost <>erfected condition It proves a great *r disappointment than ever before. Instead of revising thu tariff down ward, as was promised, the bill Is now loaded down with prohibitive duties. As a revenue producer it was long since seen to be a failure and ihenca the tax on the corjioratloTis. la splta of such overwhelming popu lar demands for n reduction of tariff duties that the Republican party was compelled to pledge Itself in Its plat form to a “revision." the Dingely duties have actually been Increased. Hxiravagant expenditures of the past have been oontlnued, Increased taxa tion has been lrnjosed and pledges to the people have been broken. The evils attending the automo bile cra«e will |>e compensated large ly if thw obsession shall bring good roads In Its wake.
