resented until they make it their
business to select senators and mem

Governor Port, of New Jersey, yes
terday went on record as alive to the
sense of party responsibility in this
matter. He is said to have declared
the tariff hills a "flat violation of
the pledges of the party to the peo
ple." Governor Port has discretion
enough to se« wiiat an ugly situa

lican party leaders at the next elec
tion. He also perceives that a
pseudo-revision of the tariff Is the
surest way to continue the tarlfT as
