B B1FVIL, Gen. Pane, Agent, DEFENDS ROOSEVELTS GUILDHALL SPEECH London, June 24.—Sir Edward Grey lias incurred no end of enmities by his defense of colonel Roosevelt's Guildhall speech. In the House of Commons things have reached an al most amusing state of affairs regard ing the famous utterance, for almost every day some member of the House rises to scold Mr. Roosevelt, only to receive in reply Sir Edward's unqual ified endorsement of the speech reiter ated. Perhaps the most vituperative onslalighter on Cel. Roosevelt thus far was that made by Sir James Henry Dalxell, the Liberal member for the Kirkcaldy Llurghs. and famous for his fighting qualities. In uddition to Mr. Roosevelt Sir Edward Grey conies in for a goodly share of abuse from the warring Scot It is said that Queen Mary Is assid uously studying the construction and English law in e-e.y possible form so that she might be fully prepared for any emergency «n case she should ever become Queen Regent. While some folks are giving King George great credit for ask ng Parliament to pos a regency hill, there are others who look upon t'is matter ns a con fession of His Majesty's oft-reported uncertain healtu. Even his most op Holistic friends ndmit mat the n?w King, unless lie nr. prows greatly, i-j unljkely to live through the span of years enjoyed by bis Illustrious fath er. In contradiction to the rumor that bridge was to bo abandoned by so cioty, mention of which was recently made in this- correspondence, there are those prominent lu society who declare that tin* rumor lias no founda tion whatever. A tour of the most promnlent bridge clubs in London finds them in «ij>porently flourishing condition and stakes get higher and higher. Perhaps the report started through the announcement made by several wtil-Ktiown society hostesses to the effect hat for a time—presum abl> tiie official juried of mourning— no bridge would be played at their weekend iartles. The truth of the fact is, according to ono prominent hostess, that they are tired of having half tuclr guests on had terms with the other half because of squabbles over cards, and are even more tired of the difficulties of getting up dances or theatricals except among the very youngest set. Another sign of the times is that at tin; London women's clubs the blliard Instructors are now busy. Wo men who have not played for years uiq practicing and those who had never learned to handle a cue ure working hard to master the gome. Non-comformist churches and chap els in London seem to be passing through a period of dejiression. The ich supporters arc* getting fewer and fewer and the poorer member* of the congregations are uuable to keep the chapels .toing without financial aid from outside. Howland Hill's old chapel on Black friars road is uow a boxing hall, aud the Southerland Chapel on Walworth road has been turned Into a cinema tograph theatre. Now the announce ment comes that owing :o linancial straits the communion plate of the Pilgrim Fathers Chapel on Old Kent road is to be sold by auction. For years past times have been bad with this old chapel, and the com* muniou plate is being sold to enable the trustees to meet mortgage pay ments. The plate is said to haveJbeefl presented to the chapel by Jonathan Owen, a Congregational pioneer. The old chapel dates from 1616. Anybody who likes to take a Bport iiiK chance in o m liomo to recover $10,000,000 from tliirty-two shipwrecks can do so l>y becoming a shareholder in a venture which is Just now taking shape in London, ft Is not a hunt for lost Spanish galleons. The promoters describe It as an exploration of thirty two known wrecks, sixteen of which have been located and survey*d. They are mostly on the South Afri can ec*ast. along which richly lad oh transports and Kast Indinmen had to Ball heforo the Suet Canal was con structed. The archives or Capo Col ony nlonc have records of more than 7.00 vessels that have been wrecked along the Cape route, and now a syn dicate has acquired license from the Cape Government graining authority to recover the contents of the thirty two known wrecks and also the ex clusive records and charts contain ing information respecting them. It Ik reported that the Laborites in t«*nd to demand representation on tin* committee which will he appointed to revise the civil ll«f. but It Ih not cer tain that their demand will he grant ed. There are many Socialists and I.a borltles who <n default of abolishing the sovereign would like to cut down the Crown’s allowance to the most meagre limitR. and they would like an opportunity to record their views, hut even if they get representation (,n the committee they will not have suf flclent power to effeet any reduction. A majority of the British people still want their sovereign to be prepared to pay what royalty costs. The magnificent charger which fol lowed the late King Edward In the fu neral procession through Ixmdon per formed his last work on that day and has now been sent to the paddock at Sandringham to end Ills days in ease, The horse is one of the two that car ried King Kdward for several years. Owing to King Edward’s weight it was no easy task to find a sultablo horse for him. Miss HHon Taft, Thin la the* first picture of th< Presidents daughtc r In long gown cut decollete..
