Pell. .—“ McKinley tabriff bill. There is not a section or a line in the entire hill that will open the market for another bushel of wheat or another barrel of pork.—James (f. Blaine. The Journal ami Era took time ami the election by the forelock and trotted out their roost era last week. It is well enough for them to do their crowing now beforo the elec tion, for afterwards their chickens will bo too sick for much of a crow, and if they have any crow at all, it will be of the black kind and with a different sound. It is also well enough for our Republican cotem porariea to boom their cannon now, ns after the election they probably won’t go off at all, or if they do, it will be a back-action. We arc re serving our roosters and cannons till about the first week iu .Novem ber. If the Democrats of Lyon District <lo their whole duty, there is no doubt but that Lieut. Hcnjaman F. Sapn will represent Lyon in the next County Court. He is a suc cessful farmer and a good business man, stands very high at home, and is honored most where he is best known, and if elected will serve the people of the county with honor arul credit. There can be no mis tako in voting for him, and this fact is well impressed on the minds of lm neighbors irrespective of pnrty. A number of the prominent Repub licans of Lyon have openly avowed their intention of voting for him. and many others will do so without saving anything about it, and so 1» re s t » you, Lieut.^Happ, County Commissioner from Lyon. We publish in th j* issue a card from Mr. Monroe in regard to cer tain reportsthat have been circu lated about his candidacy for the clerkship ami we desire to assure the pnblic that what he says ig true, «very work of it. We hare every reason in the world to believe that Mr. Monroe’s candidacy for the clerkship is in perfect good faith and that he means to be eleeterMo 1 that position if possible. His lion- I entv of purpose and integrity of ! character is not questioned by his j friends and those who know him personally and this card and com- I incut would he unnecessary but for the fact, that these fi Isc reports have b ecu circulated so'persistently and extensively that some parties who do not know Mr. Monroe may tie ltd astray thereby and give some l*td to them. YOU Fin.” Kvory time tho Afiot78 pins tho Journal down to apolitical discus sion where it is uuuble to oxtract itself from its humility, it invaria bly replies, “You fib !” This is the. sum and substance of its argument. I When the Altars cited tho fact, which is admitted by all fair-minded men of all parties, that Mr. Ooorge Harman was John \Y. Mason’s can didate, tho Journal, us usual, an swers by saying the Anars “had considerable outside help” and that it “libs.” Then it quotes the Fair mont Viryinidn to prove that ten office-holders could not boss one hundred and ninety non-olfioo-hol ders, and asserts that of tho ten Federal office-holders only four vo ted for Mr. llarmau. Now wo propose to recite a few few facts concerning the Piedmont Convention which is fresh in the minds of those who were present and would respectfully ask W\\iJonr nul to point out to us our inaccura cies ami we will cheerfully correct them. Did not every one of the Infernal Hr venue men vote for Geo. Harman? Did not Butts cast the vote of JelTcrson, Puwnall tho vote of Hampshire, Davis tho vrtte of Hardy, Bower the vote of Berkeley, l a leer the vote of itaudolph, Shinn the vote of Marion, Sturgies the vote of Monongalia, and even Poe and Love of tho Taylor county dele gation refused to ‘let Taylor vote solid for her next door neighbor, Dayton, but according to the holiest from tho Boss at Washington cast their votes for (Jeorgo Harman? Was not this the vote When the fight was beta o n Harman ami Dayton? No equivocation, dear Journal, answer up. They tell ns figures won’t lie, and when you come to sum up the votes held by the ten Federal office-hol ders and cast for Geo. Ilarman it must bo confessed that they did noniinato the gentleman from Grant county in spite of the 100 uon office-holders. Why tako the coun ties of Jefferson, Hardy, Hamp shire, Randolph, Marion and Mo nongalia, which were voted by the Federal office-holders and you can readily soe how the ten out-voted the 100. Of couse Mr. Elkins and Mr. Mason luid their friends in a'l the delegations, including our own Preston. Now as to Rro. Dawson not know ing who .John W. Mas >n was for is too absurd to mention. In the first place it was an open secret that J no. W. Mason wanted Stephen B. El kins nominated. None will deny that. In the second place it was de cided at Piedmont that if the Dav ton men refused to allow 8. B. El kins to bo nominated by acclama tion the Elkins men would throw their votes to Geo. Harman and nominate him. They did so, and Mr. Mason is the man who engi neered t’ e vhole thing. The editor of the Journal is no gosling in poli tics, and it is worse than folly for him to say that he was ignorant of what was going on in tliel ntemal Revenue circles. Wo come down on Dro. Dawson of the Journal, so heavy in our is sue two weeks ago that wo almost paralysed him. Wo cornered him up so badly that his only resource a-s usual was falsehood. JIo says in reply that we had considerable outside assistance. This is false and we defy him to prove it. We do not need any help to wind 11 ro. Dawson up. We just give hi in rope and ho winds liitnsclf up. Jn the mean time we lay low, keep our powder dry and the first thing he knows wo have him on our hip. We aro not as old as the astute edi tor of the Journal, but when years and experience fail to bring wisdom, it is a sad case indeed, but some people get so far and can get no farther. We arc young in years but not so young in experience ns j ilro. Dawson has already found out, > and this poor, peevish, childish ex- ! cuse of his that wc allow our col - j umns used by other parties to vent i their spite and air their privato gre- i veances, is a plain unvarnished lie and wo call it by no other name. I We hardly ever got any help on our j locals even, as liro. Dawson does, and write the original matter for j onr own paper except where proper ; credit is given. There was some j outside editorial matter in that is- | sue of the paper from Garners * ft leaner, hut it was propedy oredi- j ted to the Gleaner as will he seen by j reference to that issue. And now then llro. Dawson if yon have any doubts about us being able to write ! our own editorials, just try ns on. j Come at us on anything you want, to tackle us. on and be* i fore you get done with tis you will want some outside assistance your self. You might get the Man of Mar- ! rjur ss to help you out if you can res crrect him again but, you will first have to soak him in a hogs-head of arnica to get the soreness out of h;m. •THE NEW ERA CAl'UlIT. It is now thought that George liar own of Grant county, is to be set up for the congressional nomination at Piedmont. Mr. J far man is the man who rras a Senator in the W est Vir ginia Legislature in 1872, and by whose vote the joint resolution catling the constitutional convention was adopted. He teas a Republican, but isjcd with the Democrats, thus being responsible for the Bourbon const it u lion which has proved such a curse to this State. TUB REPUBLIC A NS OF THE SECOND DISTRICT CANNOT AFFORD TO NOMI NA TE GEORG E HA RMA N.— N^w Era of A ug, 22. Tho Now Era is in a close place in regard to an ill-tinicd and unwise remurk made before tho l’iedmont Convention, ns will be seen by the above extract from its cditoriul col umns of August 22, jusc before the Convention that nominated Rev. Oeo. Harman. Tho Era will try to twist out of this and lot on that it was intended to capture Democrat votes, but this is too thin to stir with a spoon and will you kindly notice that the Era won't say much this week about the candidacy of Rev. («eo. llarman. We will.choko them olT on that. TO THE PUBLIC. Some timo after my announce ment was published, a report was circulated that “ It was all in Che family,” “ Kingwood Ring,” in the interest of Mr. Martin, to pre vent other candidates from announ cing ” ate. cto. All this started from tho mere supposition of rny relationship to Mr. Martin, and certain persous in terested in my defeat, aided in its circulation, then, becoming a littlo bolder, stated that it was true, and finally that they have jtosi/ive truth that it is true. Now I wish to say to the public, that the whole story from tho be ginning to the end is a lie, and en tirely without foundation in fact. As an excuse for the assertion, that “it is all in the family” it is stated that my wife is a niece of Mr. Martin. This is not* true, My wife i3 a daughter of Mr. Jackson’s first wife, a lady from Pennsylvan ia, who was in no way related to Mr. Martin. I beg tho public’s indulgence for this bit of family history, but since it must be publishsd I wish it to be done truthfully. My announcement as a candidate wue, and is still mado in all sincer ity, without thought of intrigue with ajiy one, and because I want to be clerk of the County Court. Very respectfully, Julius K. Monroo. The Democrats of llowesvillo and vicinity are earnest and enthusiastic in the interest of tariff reform and the success of Democracy. They met last Saturday night in the school house there ami organized a Club, in spite of the bad weather. (’onsidcring that it was a cold, dark, rainy night, the attendance wusgood and the Club started out with about twenty members. Michael Lynch was elected President, Francis llorg man, Secretary, Chris Rorgmun, Treasurer, and Vincent Cooke, Jani tor. There will be no meeting Sat urday night of this week on account of the convention at Terra Alta, but arrangements are being made for a big time Saturday night, tho 11th. Tho Club is “The William L. Wil son Club No. Two,” as Terra Alta has No. One. This shows the popu larity of our past, present ami next Congressman in spite of the way tho lads are whooping op Rev. Harman. 008 MAX ABOUT TOWR. He Ulses nn to Mnlie Home Interest* In* Hem arks. There wan rjuite a little fracas among the Durktown poptilution last Sunday. Two ebony chunks of II am came together on Price st reet with a rush that wakened up the Sabbath fpiiot of our Methodist town for a short time and gave the boys something to remark abont. It seems that John Graham, the j>orter at the Gordon House had some trouble with Joe Younger’s boy and Sunday afternoon Joe came to town to settle the score and got settled himself. Ho came in for a row and he got it. He met John ami tackled hint on Albright’s store porch and for a little while they hit, scratched, clawed and slogged each other in groat shape, , until John got loose and grabbed a ! rock weighing three pounds and warned Joe off, but Joe ducked his * head and waded in. John, who is left handed, took aim and hit him above the eye, and he dropped like a beef. The lick could bo heard 100 yards and would have killed a white man outright, but Joe got up after I trying two or three times and start ed for John again, wiio had a rock in each hand by this time and would have finished him if spectators had not interfered. Joe went over to Dr. Prntt’s and got sewed up. John looked like he had been slnvving with a buzz saw or wrestling with a mule. Now all this happened right on the main street of the town in the presence of a dozen spectators nnd yet no arrests have been made blit the parties let go clear. Where, O, where is our municipal authorities? We would suggest to the good people of the town that a wooden set be made and deposited in tho court house for the name of the thing and to save tho trouble of elections here after. *** The latest and best thing out, is , a good joke on the young people of Albrightsville. Tuesday night of this week, they assembled at Ash ford Snyders to have an old-fash ioned cane-molnsses-pulling, as they were making up the sorgum there. Tho lads and lassies re mained till late having a good time generally. Shortly after this party broko up njbirthdny took place. I)r. Martin, of Kingwood, was sum moned and a fine, hearty boy baby was born to Mr. ar.d Mrs. Snyder. Father and child aro doing well. There was a wad death in town last night, that of little Bessie Potter of Buckhannon who was here visiting with her mother. She has been afflicted for some time time with Brights disease and as she very much wanted to visit here her mother brought her in the hopes that it would improve her health, but she died last night at 10.30 and will be taken home for burial. Her father Conrod Potter, was telegraph ed last night and is expected today on the noon train and the father and mother will leave this evening for home with the remains of theii daughter. She was agid 14 years very young to fall a victim to that fatal malady Brights disease. i)r. Martin attended her whilo litre. ypifctable Courtship. A potato wont out on a mash, And nought an onion tied ; “Thal’ii tile for mo,” obrorved the nquash. And all tho beet i turned rod ; "Go away," the onion Weeping cried. “Your love I cannot bo: The pumpkin Is your lawful bride. You cantaloupe with me.” But onward still the tuber came, And laid down at her feet; "You cauliflower by any name And It will smell ns wheat; And I, too, as an early rose, And you I’ve come to sen, Bo don't turnip your lovely nose, But spinach It with me." "Ah, spare mo a cre»s." the tuber rrayod ; "Myclierry-tshed bride you'll be; You are the only weeping maid That’s currant now with me." And as tho wily tuber spoko He grasped the bashful prize, And giving her an artichoke, Devoarod her with his ryes. Daniel Feather of Long Hollow met with a serious accident last Sat urday that might-huve resulted fa tally, be being a man over 70 years of age. Ho was out gathering chestnuts and fell about fifteen-feet from a chestnut troe, lighting on his head and shoulder. Ho was un conscious for somo time, but came to and walked home. Ho was se verely cut abou* the head from some stones lie.alighted on and is badly bruised and very sore but will soon recover. Merchant M. C. Feather of this place (his son) was sent for and went out Mnnday to see him and reports him doing well. Mr. C. Y.
