"m: The BIG STORE Where The People Go IN SOCIAL CIRCLES. Miss Wells Entertained the B. "Teazed" Club Last Night. A PLEASANT AFFAIR. The Olympia Club Will Dance Next Tuesday Night. Last evening at her charming houie corner Charles and Brown Betty streets. Miss Blauche Wells entertained the members of the "B. Teazed" Eucher club in a most hospitable manner. Ihis club which has been organized by the young society ladies of the city is just in its inception and the recep tion tendered the members last evening by Miss Wells was the first meeting they have had since its organization. It is composed of the best people of the city and there is not the least doubt but that the long winter evenings will be most pleasantly whiled away at the fascinating game from which the club takes its mime. It is the ob ject to hold the meetings of the club at the homes of the members alternately, and a meeting will probably be held each week. The meeting of the club last eve ning at the home ol Miss Wells was a most enjoyable one, and if taken as a criterion of the ones to be held during the winter, there is not the least doubt of a pleasant time. The guests arrived at about 8 o'clock and Miss Wells was assisted in re ceiving by several of her young lady friends. The playing com menced at about 9 ? clock and as there were some excellent players in the club it was fascinating, ex citing and very interesting. Miss Lucie Ramey received first prize, and Col. Jack Kincaid got the sec ond. A very pleasant surprise for the members of the club was the elegant luncheon served in th^ dining room of the Hotel Wells w ..icli ad joins the Wells residence. Mine j Host Wilson, as a caterer cannot be 1 equaled at anything but last even I ing he seemed to have outdone him self. The tables in the dining j room were most artistically arrang? 1 ed and the luncheon consisted of appropriate viands for the occasion were served in the inimitable style of the hotel. I Among those present at the re I ceptton tendered the club by Miss Wells were, Mr. and Mrs. William 1 Neuenschwander, Miss Mae Mc Ginnis, ot St. Louis, Misses Sayde Wallace, Georgie Roome, Lucie j Ramey, Annie Elliot, Sara Agnew, I Anna Elder, Lieut. James R. Sta thers, Messrs. H. J. Porterfield, Will Agnew, George W. Bishop, John Kincaid, Joseph P. Sweeney, Harry W. Jackson, Frank Berry and Frank Colbert. The outlook in social circles for the winter in this city is all that could be desired. There will be I quite a number ot swell dnnces and entertainments by the different or ; ganizations and it has even been ! hinted that betore the winter is over there will be one or more weddings i but so tar Dame Rnmor has men tioned no names. At a meeting of a number of young men a short ' time ago the Olympia club was or ganized. This c':ub wiil practically take the place of the old Americns club and the dances will be held I tri weekly in the city building, i The first reception by the members ; of this club will be held 011 Tues day evening next. The Virginia ' club has not been reorganized and I probably will not be but a number of the members have been making' arrangements to hold several im promptu affairs during the winter and the first one will probably oc cur in a short time. A number ot the younger set have been holding meetings lately and it is very likely there will be a couple of clubs or ganized for the purpose of cards and other amusements. Whist does not seem to have much of a call this year and although an interest may be awakened in this game late in the season the outlook for a club at the present time is not very ta i vorable. Nrt?1 ImpndrnM. Fifty years ago the allowance o t paint in the British navy was very small, and sometimes the officers had to pay large sums in order that their ships might maintain a decent appear ance. One of them resorted to a humor ous expedient, either to soften the heart of the navv board, or ?? that jtt.vod im possible, to express his opi!,:^\ Sir John Phillimortt pai:T one side of his old yellow frigate black and white and used the rest ol' the black paint in printing on the other sido in large letters, "No more paint." The navy board wrote to call his at tention to tho impropriety of his con duct and signed themselves, as they did officially, "Yonr affectionato friends." To this Sir John replied that he could not obliterate the objectionable lottera i unless he was given more paint and signed himself in turn, "Your affec tionate friend, John Phillimore. " The navy board then called his atten- I tiou to the impropriety of the signature, to which Sir John replied, aeknowledg- 1 iug the letter, stating that ho regretted that tho paint had not been sent and ending : "i am no longer your affection ate friend, John Phillimoro. " His frigate was allowed to retain hor original yellow, and perhaps the navy board did right thus to punish Sir John's impertinence. ? Youth's Companion. My Lttriy's Gorgeoos Slipper. My lady's slipper sees a very radical change this summer. It is no more plain and unadorned ; no longer does a simple little bow or unobtrusive rosette orna ment it. Instead the slipper is now a irery gorgeous affair. It glistens, both by sunlight and the gleam of gas or eleotricity, for it is a jeweled p>ipper j and oftener than otherwise elaborately ' jeweled. The style is to have these ilipper jewels match tho pin or necklace yon : are wearing, both in the gems them ; selves and in the settiug. When fan j tastic and curious designs are worn in 1 oddly finished gold, the effect is exceed i ingly picturesque ?nd attractiva Rhine j stones are the favorite slipper ornaments i of the summer, diamonds being of > course too valuable to be allowed to twinkle carelessly on one's ?*?t. i The ornament most admire*! is a gold or jeweled buckle, either large or small. ! Tiiis will rest upon a bow or rosette of satin and will be of many quaint and odd designs. The Milk In the Coroanat. Every boy knows tho three eyes to be found in one end of a cocoauut, and many a boy has bored theso eyes out, or f>ne or two of them, with tho email blade of a pocketkuife so as to get at the milk in the cocoauut, which he has then drained out into a cup or drunk direct j from tho cocoauut itself. But there is a more fascinating way still of getting at tho milk in the cocoauut. i By this other method tho cocoanut Is opened at tho other end from tho eyes 1 Tho cocoanut is struck all around gen tly and repeatedly with a hammer, or a stone will do, at a distance of about one third of tho way down fr om tho top. about where tho arctic ciirclo would be on a globo. A continual gentle tapping will final ly crack the shell of tho nut all around; not in a lino exactly on tlio circle per haps, but pretty near to it Sometimes it cracks shell and meat of tho nut, too, ao that both can bo lifted off together; sometimes it cracks out only a shell cap at the top, which is lifted off, and the cap of meat underneath is tJheu cut ou* around with a knife. And then there you are> with tl* frhite lined cocoanut cup to drink front ? New York Sun. The Criatnbnl Colon. It is a curious instance of the irony of history that ut. the close of the first great naval battle between the United State* and Spain in the waters of the new world there should have been loft battered and stranded upon tho Cuban coast u K1-eat war vessel named in honor of the discoverer whoui Ferdinand and Isabella sent out to find that very island and this huge destined hemisphere. And should it prove possible, as Commodore Schley believes it is, to save the Cristo bal Colon and to add her to the United States navy us a retributive namesak? of the sunken Maine the coincidence would bo doubly strange. ? Cincinnati Enquirer. MEW TERRITORY Added to JnckNon Rid|t? Keener l>r velopment. Operators and leaseholders in the Jackson Ridge Keener sand devel opment, on the Ohio side of the Sistersville field, have been keeping a close watch on some wells drill ing on the outside of defined lim its. One of the most important, the Fisher Oil company's wildcat on Browning's farm, located about two and a half miles west of the devel opment, was drilled into the sand yesterday and is showing for a pro ducer. As soon as the pay was tapped the hole filled up 500 feet with oil. The indications are for a paying producer and an extension to the pool. The Keener sand on that side of the river is close and hard, and all of the wells have to be shot before they are at their best. The Jack- - son Ridge territory is not likely to furnish any gushers, but a large number of small but profitable pro ducers with commendable staying ^ qualities are probable. The Jackson Ridge country has been tree from fake reports up to last Tuesday, when the prevaricat or made his appearance at Sisters ville and unloaded a hair raising report that Barnsdall & Co. had drilled in a wildcat on the Cronin farm located two and a half miles northwest of the Jackson Ridge development, and it was flowing at the rate of 1,000 barrels a day. It can be stated with a degree of certainty, that there will be no 500 or 1,000 barrel gushers at Tack son Ridge unless there is a change in the sand formation. ? Wheeling News.
