"Mr. Cash" (that wasn't hi? name), he said, "these gentlemen have bet me $500 that I cannot bor row $1,000 from you. I don't need the money, but you let me have it for a day, and I'll divide the bet with you." The committee gasped, but the ef fect of the cool proposition was un looked for. Local Strike A strike of the pumpers on the the Buckeye lease in the employ of the South Penn Oil company oc curred last Friday morning, about 35 men leaving their places. There was no trouble between the men and the company regarding wages or honrs, and both sides were apparently satisfied in this re spect; but the bone of contention was the union to which the men belonged. It is stited by the men that they received orders from the company that they mast relioquish either the union or their jobs, and they chose to sacrifice the latter. Before the men struck, two or three of their members had been removed by the company, for the reason, the men state, that they were Uulon men, and this brought about a suspension of work. A number of men, we learn, have been brought here from other places to fill the vacancies. Some returned as soon as they learned of the situation, whiie others went to work. There has been no excitement over the trouble, and the men have conducted the strike in a peaceable manner. The best of feeling has heretofore existed between the men and their superiors, and it is to be hoped some amicable agreement may be arrived at and pleasant re lations resumed. ?Salem Leader. This Parrot Damned the Yarrt ees A parrot with a history, which belonged to Samuel H. Miller near Shepherdstown, died last Monday. The bird was 58 years old. Messrs. Morgan and Rentch Miller went to California from Maryland in 1849, hunting gold, and when they re turned they came back by the Isth mus of Panama. Here they bought a couple of parrots, which they carried home. One of them died some years later, but the other was a tough old bird and lived to en dorse the adage that the good die young. He was well cared for and highly regarded by the Miller fam ily. During the battle of Antietam, in the Civil War, a bullet struck the strap by which Polly's cage was suspended, and the bird was shocked and angered. "'Damn the , Yankees" it exclaimed, and was| ruffled for quite a while. The par rot was given to Thomas Miller, j and when he died he left it to Sam uel H. Miller. When it died a few days ago it was buried on the Mil- ; ler lot in the graveyard, in compli- I ance with a request of Thomas Mil- | ler. It Saved My Hand. Two years ago last August I cut my finger with a broken jug. It was very hot weather and I was working in the bark woods. My arm clear to my body swelled badly and blood poison set in. I never suffered so in my life. For twelve days and nights I did not sleep. My friends said there was no hope for me unless my arm was taken off. I used San Cura Ointment as thick as a dollar three "times a day. It<| stopped the pain and drew out water, blood and dark pus, reducing all swelling. The skin came off my hand and arm, but thanks to San Cura, I have a sound hand and arm, to the great surprise of all my friends. You do not claim enough for San Cura Ointment, THOMAS F. M'CAULEY, Cooperstown, Pa. Saw Reflection of Fire Residents of Shepherdstown saw a distinct reflection in the sky of the Baltimore conflagration, though the distance between the two plac es is fully 100 miles. W&naondJcer's Beginning The number of men who fall on account of lack of courage Is enormous. Tbe number who would refuse to let go of a dol lar if tbey knew positively that it would bring back two is as tonishing. Such men merely ex ist They don't live. They never really amount to anything. The men who win are the men who think out the right course to pursue and then back up their convictions with their last penny and their last ounce of energy. The first goods John Wana maker ever sold brought him $35. He delivered his goods In a wheelbarrow. He col lected the $35 and went di rectly to a newspaper office and planked It down for ad vertising space. Some men would have spent $1.50 for some cheap dodgers and "saved" the rest.
