Council met in adjourned ses sion last evening. Present? Mayor Kirtland, City Clerk Hilliard ; Councilmen Bell and Ryan, First ward; Loughnev, Second ward: Frame, Third ward; Brown and Kerr, Fourth ^The Central Banking and Se curity company of W est \ irginia made application for the substi tution of certain city bonds in place of others held by that com pany and drawn for redemption at the recent bond drawing oi council. Application granted. The City Clerk was instructed to cancel a quantity of bond cou pons that have been paid by the citv in years past without cancel* lation. * This delinquency was re ported to Council by John J. Mc Kay, one of the auditors. The matter of street gas lamps was taken up by Council under head of Street committee, and jit ter discussion left with the (^ty Attorney for investigation. It was ordered that Water 1 Commissioner Cutler be reimburs ed the sum of $6.70, which he had overpaid to the collector and trea surer as shown by the Auditor s The matter of licenses was tak en up and the Clerk read a peti tion from the Reyraann Brewing company to the effect that it had a valid lease after May 1 to the premises now occupied by Clendennin?r company, at No. < 11 Wells street, and that the appli cation of the latter company for a license for that place should not be considered. There were two ^PPli^tion ^or liquor license at No. 711; that of the Clendenning 'company and the Burland com ; pany, and the applicants were j represented by counsel in the per sons of A. B. Hunt and Lawrence , Reymann, respectively. Council decided that it had no jurisdiction to try titles to the premises in controversy, and by a |\ote of 5 to 1 granted the appli : cation of the applicant in posses Ision and refused the application of the other applicant. \\ holesale liquor licenses were : granted- to the Reymann Brewing j company and the Schmulbach Brewing company and retail li censes to the Clendenning com pany (2), M. Drug store licenses to Stotler & Corbett, George W. Ilill and Mrs. I). A. Hendershot. Boarding house licenses to T. J. ?Steel and M. II. Prosser. Cigarette licenses to Jos. Cassis & company, Mike Xessif & Broth er, Solomon Skaff, McMullen & Knapp and Stotler & Corbett. Plumbers' licenses to Belford & Guyton and T. K. Smith. Hotel licenses to James Cham bers, II. E. Wilson and C. F. Mer- , cer. Wharfboat license to W. I). Be dilion. The bonds for the liquor li censes were furnished by the Cen tral Banking and Security com pany, with the exception of that of II. E. Wilson, which was fur nished by Eph Wells. Each bond is in the penalty of $3,500. The- Clerk was instructed to no tify all those who have not ap plied for license, and are required to do so under the license ordi nance. to make application with out delay. LAID TO REST Yesterday afternoon, amid the j tears and heartfelt sobs of the sorrow-stricken parents and sis ter and other relatives and friends all that was mortal of John Ear nest Armstrong, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Armstrong, were laid to rest in the beautiful family plot in Oakwood cemetery. , A few minutes befofe 2 o'elock ? the hour set for holding the ser vices ? the family residence on Catherine street, was filled to its utmost capacity by the friends of the dearly beloved and highly esteemed young man,' who had been cut down before reaching his majority. 'Many were unable to gain admittance to the house, but remained on the veranda and stood on the sidewalk in front of V, : ;?? v;r the residence until the services were concluded. Rev. T. A. Andersen, pastor of the Presbyterian church, con ducted the services. The speak er's remarks were very appropri ate and impressive. He paid a high tribute to the noble Christian character of deceased, and of the eood and pure life he had lived. The singing by the following quartet was beautiful : Mrs. Rob ert Corbett, Mrs. Robert McCor mick. John Kinkaid and R. E. De vore. The selections rendered were "Jesus, Lover of My Soul;" "Lead, JBIindlv Light," and "Asleep in Jesus." Miss Ulman presided at the organ. As the procession slowly wended its way to the cemetery the streets were lined on either side with people, who, in silent reverence, paid their last tribute of respect to the memory of this good and noble young man. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. The following young men, who acted as pallbearers, were former schoolmates of deceased: Algeo Marsh, John Finlayson, Jr., Clyde Johnson, Clyde Devore. Paul Do lan, Orlo Buell, Dye Guvton and Richard Sage. Boy Run Over. Master Eddie Holtsworth had the misfortune to gret run over by the Gates Tranfer company's bus. on Wells street, about C o'clock last evening. The acci dent happened directly in front of the Eureka Pipe Line office. The lad was attempting to climb into the vehicle when he fell un der it. one wheel passing over his body at the waist. Aside from a few bruises the chlid was unin jured. This should be a lesson to other boys who are in the habit of indulging in this dangerous practise. It is almost a miracle that young Holtsworth escaped serious injury. Annversary Service?. Anniversary services of the L 0. 0. F. order of this city will be conducted this evening at the 31. E. church by Revs. H. B. Bow den and A. S. Kellev. It is the eighty-fifth anniversary of the lodge, and the members will march to the chureh in a body at 8 o'clock. Immediately after the services a banquet will be served the members at the Citizens' Hose house by the Daughters of Rebec ca.
