A? OLD ROMAN BATH.
Women u&<d to lose their hairpins
a thousand years ago much in the
same way as (hoy do today. That
at least is the impression one gets
from the antiquities found during
last year at the Silchester excava
tions.
The most interesting discover)
was the building which formed ap
parently the principal baths of the
Koman town. The exploration of
the baths yielded a number of ar
chitectural fragments, including a
small altar, portions of capitals and
bases, part of a large basin of Pur
beck marble and 6ome singular
pieces of metal.
In a lilled up hypocaust were
found at least 100 bone pins which
had evidently been used to adjust
the back hair of Roman women who
used the baths. Probably they had
been dropped in the way woman
throughout the aees has shed pins
and were collected by the keeper of
the baths. Some of them are quite
three inches long and would make
passable hatpins for the present
fashion.

St. Pierre Now a Graveyard.
The volcanoes of Mont Pelee, St.
Pierre and Martinique are entirely
extinct, and smoke has disappeared.
The place has come to be very at
tractive to tourists, hundreds of
whom visit the scene of one of the
world's greatest tragedies every day.
The search for jewels and money
continues in the ruins and probabiy
will until every house site on the is
land has been raked over a score of
times. The once beautiful city of
St. Pierre is now a graveyard.
Better Late Than Never.
A woman entered a Franklin
Falls (X. H.) shoe store recently
and said to the proprietor, "You
have a bill against my grandfather,
haven't you?" "Yes," was the re
ply. "Ilow much is it ?" was the
next question. The proprietor did
not remember, but it was arranged
that he should look it up and she
would call later. He did so, and it
was found to be eighteen years old.
A few days later the woman called
&nd settled.
A Quaint Introduction.
Senator Spooner of Wisconsin
says the best speech of introduction
he ever heard was delivered by s
German mayor of a small town in
Wisconsin, where Spooner had en
gaged to speak. The mayor said:
"Ladies und shentlemcns, 1 asked
half been to indrotoose you to the
Hon. Senator Spooner, vho to you
vill make a speech, yes. I hnf now
done so, und he vill now Jo so."

Tbe few old ex-slaves now left In the
West Indies have many curious cus
toms, but the most curious is that of
burying themselves on the installment
plan. When they comb their hair they
are careful not to pull more hairs from
the head than they can help. f"hose
which come away they roll into a ball
and put Into a bag of white muslin.
They do the same with the parings of
their nails and any other portions of
their anatomy which become detached
When the bag is full they bury it If
asked why they do this they reply:
"When me dead, massa, you bury me
body. Me hair am part of me body, so
me bury it now when it dead."
A Nickname For Barrett.
Lawrence Barrett the tragedian, wa? I
subject to dyspepsia, and when he was
suffering from that disorder he was
cold and distant toward his company.
One irreverent fellow always refused, i
however, to be suppressed. He said one
lay: "Just look at Cassins. He looks
as solemn and righteous as if he'd swal- I
lowed the swo#l of Justice. Let's call )
him the Scabbard." And the Scabbard
he was? out of his hearing? for the rest
of that season.

"What I want." said the coy inaid

"Oh," exclaimed the milliner, with
sudden inspiration. "I have a hand
painted hat in the window that I'm
sure will be Just what you want."

Brain Food Nonsense.
Another ridiculous food fad has
been branded by the most compe
tent authorities. They have dis
covered the silly notion that one
kind of food is needed for brain
another for muscle, and still an
other for bones. A correct diet
will not only nourish a particular
part of the body, but will sustain
every other part. Yet, however
good your food may be, its nutri
ment is destroyed by indigestion
or dyspepsia. You must prepare
for their appearance or prevent
their coming by taking regular
doses of Green's August Flower,
the favorite medicine of the
healthy millions. A few doses
aids digestion, stimulates the liver
to healthy action, purifies the
blood and makes you feel buoyant
and vigorous. You can get Dr.
Green's reliable remedies at D. A.
