Thomas B. Davis, of Keyser, W. Va., was nominated for congress at the second district Democratic convention at Keyser "Wednesday by acclamation. The colonel is probably the strongest candidate the democrats could have nominated. J. D. Nickerson of Independ ence, Kan., brought suit in Miami county for possession of a lease and $10,000. In 1890 he drilled a well on the Beahr farm, near Paola, and found a little gas, but only enough to supply the home and a slaughter house. Nickerson wanted to pull the casing, but Beahr enjoined him, and the courts compelled him to put the ' casing back so the occupants could have the gas, but it confirm ed the lease for fifteen years. The tract changed hands and the own er. Mr. Solmes, leased it to Beatty Bros., who recently developed eiijht wells with a production of 150 barrels of oil. The lease is estimated at $40,000 to $50,000. Mr. Nickerson certainly has a good case. One of our most important in cidents in our history was the joint debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas in 1858. It had an immense effect upon the whole history of the country and made Lincoln pies ident, although Douglas won the United Spates senatorship for which they both were striving. The Illinois Historical So ciety is hit'i *u:ing for a semi-cen tennial ceic''V:ition of the debate, or rather del-ales, for there were a number of them. One effect of the celebration will be to make more of theability and prominence of Douir'.;t>. whose fame was ob i scared ty I he great prominence iu'io which Lincoln soon came, and by his own ? i?*;i t h shortly after the election of his rival to (lie presidency. j ' From reading accounts of the ' events taking place in Chicagfo cue might imagine that he waSji receiving details of aieanti-semitic riot in southern Russia, when a j ? priest is beaten for attending tin wounded in the performance ol his religious duties, and women an* hustled about and have bun dles torn from them because they have made purchases in boycotted shops. Depths of depravity have been reached below anything thought pos- b!e of American cit izens. The labor conflict now going on appears to have stirred lip a spirit of mob outlawry in clined to extraordinary excesses. The usu;?l expedients which may be resorted to for the settle ment of labor conflicts fail in the c.ise of sympathetic strikes, for those do not present any differ ences to be arbitrated. Ihey are called to enforce a boycott, which is an illegal procedure and can not be engaged in without incurr ing liability for damages. Bus iness concerns which join in a conspiraney to injure the business of other firms would soon find an injunction resting upon them and would be compelled to choose be tween obedience to strike orders and obedience to the law. The patient, who is fully recover ed, does not know whether she should return eye^lajies to the French or the German sa^eon. The German surgeon, .ay.; the ilcdical Kecord, is in an embarrassing posi tion, for either he lo.-t l I:e eyeglasses or he failed to lincl them wlien he operated. ? New York Pre. s. Irrigation Abroad. Nowhere is irrigation practiced so extensively as in India, where about 25,000,000 acres are irrigated. Egypt is next. The Assouan dam in the Nile is considered one of the greatest engineering feats in the his torv of the human race. Irrigation is new in Australia, but is spread ing rapidly there, ami the same is more or less true of South Africa. The practice of irrigation has de clined or entirely disappeared in many regions where it prevailed in remote ant iquitv. Window Washing. Do not wash windows when the' sun is shining on them, as thev will look cloudy and streaky from dry ing before they are well polished. The glass and sa?h should be first dusted and the window washed on the in.*idc with water and a little ammonia. Alcohol is excellent for washing windows; only a small quantity is Acquired, and wood al cohol is good for this purpose. Potato Water. Water in which notaloe* have been boiieii is excellent fgj Qieaninp* vrrjoTorT fi'ml silk goods. ;u low two potatoes to a pint of water if wanted strong. It can be bottled for later use. The coarse pulp left after pouring off the clear liquid is good for cleaning carpets, curtains and other thick goods, also for light coiored t i * - >s. and then no starch ing i- r.? cilcd. WILD ELEPHANTS. ^talking Them Is a Sport That Gives Plenty of Excitement. An old African hunter writes: "Stalking with eiophauts is a sport that must always provide plenty excitement to i,hc stalker, and irr a thick forest, with its dense under grov. ch, this excitement is intensi fied, increasing as tJie signs show that t he quarry is close at hand. Elephants when at rest and not alarmed in any way frequently keep up a curio. is sort of rumbling noise, dillicult to describe, but one heard never forgotten, 'ihis sound can l>c heard for a considerate distance. In spile of their size it is marvel ous how invisi'uie elephants in thick cover can be. it is only after the most careful search that their forms can he distinguished, and it is gen erally the flapping of an enormous ear or the swishing of a tail that re veals their whereabouts. "As a rule, they stand perfectly motionless. Hut gradually, if he keeps quite still and allows his eyes to get used to the glooin of the for est, the hunter will be able to make out the presence of several gigantu forms, very jKJssibly in surprisingly close proximity to the place where he is standing. If the wind remains favorable he can watch them at his leisure, and such a sight is well worth seeing. Some of them may be asleep, leaning against the tree trunks, and others may be lying down flat on their sides, though this last sight is only occasionally seen. "Should no breath of air from his vicinity reach them he may go as close as he likes to them with im punity ? almost touch them, in 'fact, lie would, however, before doing so do well u? nvonnoiter, especially in thick cover, and assure. himself thai he has not passed any member of the herd unobserved and thus given him his wind. Should such a con tingency ari-.f the. alarm is commu nicated like m-'Cfic. Probably a warn ing squeal '.'.'ill be heard, and up will go every trunk. "Then the whole party \ :il either vanish :;-.ey like a visi"M or one or more < .' '\:\\ wiij e' ;rge si night for the spot whence the disquieting otlor issues. Should the herd con tain many cow-, more especially if accompanied by calves, thii jast re sult is nhlif&t certain to happen. Bull elephants, on the other hand, if unwounded, will most probably make off without any hostile demon stration." Sure Cure for Piles.
