If it clears off in the night, look
for rain the next day. If smoke
from the chimney settles instead of
rising, there is a storm at hand.
When sound travels a long distance
there is also a storm near. Xever
expect much storm in the old of the
moon. The absence of dew and un
usually heavy dew are alike forerun
ners of rain. Xot much frost need
be expected in the light of the moon.
An owl hooting in the hollow is
a sign of a cold storm; on the hill it
foretells a thaw. If the hornets
build low, the winter will be hard.
When leaves fall early the winter
will l>e long. When snow falls on a
hard road it, will not last long. The
last spring snowstorm never comes
until after the "sugar snow," which
may be recognized by coming in un
usually large flakes and lasting only
a few minutes. If the hog's milt is
found big at the front the first part
of winter will be most severe. If
the reverse is true we may look for
hard weather in February and
March. Bright "northern lights"
bring severe cold. Sun dogs indicate
a bad storm.
Distant sound heard distinctly
forebodes no good weather. If the
sun draws up water" it will rain.
The pitcher sweating and the tea
kettle boiling dry also indicate rain, j
Cobwebs thickly spread upon the
grass are an indication ' of fair
weather. Animal life seems, ac
cording to the popular notion, to
have peculiar warnings regarding j
the weather changes. Some of these !
are explainable bv natural causes.
It is a fact recognized by all intel
ligent stockmen that cattle have an
intimation of an approaching storm
some hours before it is visible to the
human eye. 'J here is certain rest
lessness which the cowboy has learn
ed to interpret at once.

Waterproof Dressing For Shoes.
Spermaceti, four parts; pure gum
rubber, cut very small, one part.
Melt with a gentle heat, ;?nd then
i dd tallow or lard, ten parts; copal
varnish, five parts. Mix well and
apply the composition to the leath
er with a paint brush. Be sure to
let the rubber dissolve without stir
ring. It will take four or five hours.
To Remove Marking Ink.
To remove marking ink from lin
en dip the garment in a solution of
one ounce cyanide of potassium in
four ounces of water. After a few
hours the stain will be obliterated.
This is very effectual, but the mix
ture is deadly poison and should be
handled with extreme care and care
fully removed.
Whitewashing.
It is often thought that white
washing over dirt will restore the
clean appearance. This is a mis
take, and the walls will never lo'jk
iiice unless they are cleaned before
whitewashing.
