Corbitt, Prop. BATHING IN THE SEA. t Ort*lna?ed In Enfland la the felfktrrBlh Century. Sea bathing bad its origin in England before 17."?0, when Dr. Ric hard Russell published his treatise on the virtues of sea water. The healing virtues of Lh? sea bath were not understood; nor was the practice of sea bathing gen eraily resorted to. There seems to have existed a horror of the sea; in deed, in mediaeval times a compulsory dip in its waters was a sentence often passed on tbe public offender. In tbe earlier decades of tbe eighteenth eeu tury western Europe suffered heavily under "king's evil," tbe popular name for that tuberculous affection which scourged all classes from peer to peas ant. Dr. Russell, a Sussex practitioner, bad observed that dwellers on tbe coast used to drink of tbe sea water, bathe in it, even wash their sores in it and bind them up with sea weed. Having satisfied himself as to tbe efficacy of tbe practice he began to prescribe for bis patients with most satisfactory results. Ilis treatise re sulted in the coasts becoming large ly patronized by tbe ailing, and tbe de mand for seaside lodgings was soon a growing quantity. This gradually spread to the continent. Then people commenced to *ce that fresh water was a good thing, and tbe vital im portance of the skin as an excretor of waste was greatly emphasized some what later (in l.SMi, when the morning "tub" was instituted' ami has since ac quired a worldwide reputation. OLD JEWISH TRADITION. The Wnj- tlie Imim-HIc* of Old Lout Their Third Kye. The Jews of eastern Palestine and Asia Minor have a queer tradition which has survived from jjucieut time-; and tells of a remote period in their history when every fully devolped Is raelite was equipped with three perfect eyes. The two main optics were situ ated in tbe front part of the head, Ju^; as eyes are today, but tbe third was located in the back part of tbe bead just above the nape of the neck in tbe edge of tbe hair. This wonderful third eye in man was not "evoluted" out of existence, but was closed by divine in junction on the day when Moses was given tbe tallies of stone on Sinai. You remember that God's command on tbe day that the tables were renew ed was to the effect that no man should be seen in the vicinity of the holy mount. (See Ex. xxxiv, The be lievers in the three eye tradition say that Moses supplemented God's com mand by ordering tbe faithful who were encamped in the valley to turn their heads from the mountain. This they did. but took good care to uncover the eye that was situated in the back of tbe bead. Moses, noticing this show of duplicity oil the part of bis follow ers, asked God to close tbe third, or rear, eye. and since that day the Israelites, in common with the remainder of hu manity, have been forced to depend on two eyes only. Renrn of Okoflnokee Swamp. The great Oketinokee swamp begins not far from Waycross. Ga., and ex tends due south for a distance of about forty miles, running over into Florida. Here in this vast tract of desolate bog and swanm are thousands of black bear and ueer and wild turkeys with out number. The whole region is a hunter's paradise, and yet so abundant is the game in this remote and desolate country that it does not seem t<> dimin ish ill spite of the uiiiirods. The bears weigh fr?>m -<X) to .'{mo pounds and pnt in a great part of their time preying upon the pigpens of the farmers. If forced into ;i light they are dangerous nntsigonist-s. and no prudent hunter will attar!, one save jit a point of vantag". W;! ;hiPgl"U Po t.
