Pleasant Register is forty years old and continues to be one ol the best weeklies in the State. The Keynotes now sounding indicate some lively campaign music for the Republicans and an all “rag time,” program for the Democrats. Unless you repent and believe in the Hon. W. J. Bryan you cannot be saved, so the Commoner says, and the Commoner is the Democratic bible. Free trade theorists would tind conditions in Africa to suit them. All the exports are national products ami all the imports manufactured articles. The taxpayers of this end of. the county, from whom a large amount of the taxes are collected, regardless of politics, think the Advance has a just right to make complaint, m their behalf, be cause the County Court refuses to have the Financial Statement published iu a paper published on the Ohio river, simply because the members of the court do not happeu to agree with the politics of said paper. In speaking of this matter the Way ue News says : “As the publication is only made' one week, tho pay lixed by luw ia not proportionately as large as it is on publications that are made for four weeks. The court, to: publish the statement in two papers, must either pay more than the law provides, or else rob their party paper of patronage to which it is entitled. As a matter of compromise tho court gave the work to the Democratic paper at three-fourths the price fixed by luw, aud published the statement iu one paper only.” The News is iu error when it says “the pay lixed by law is not proportionately as large as it is on publications that are made for four or more weeks.” When a legal publication is made for only one week it is just twice and ahalf more for the first week than it is for each additional week. The News receives almost double the amount for the publication of the Financial Statement for one week that the Advance does tor publish mg the proposed Constitutional Amendments for thirteen weeks. In speaking of the amendments the News pays: “There is not a paper iu the State but would jump at the chance to publish these amendments ut half price.” The same can be said in regard to the Financial Statement. Under a Republican County Court the Ad vance published the Fiuaucial Statement, and although we did not count the uurnber of words to see what it would have amounted to at legal rates, we are satisfied we did not receive more than one half legal rales for same. The Republican members of the County Court, those honest, conscientious and business-like men—Judge James McQiiiu and John Y. York —and that honest and upright Democrat, who was ever looking to the welfare of ihe tax-payere, Mr. Asbury Jackson—had the State men* published in both the Re publican and Democratic papers of the county at less than the law ful rate for uuo paper and the publishers of the papers were perfectly satisfied with the price. The Advance was perfectly willing to be “robbed” then and the con science of the News was not seared to any great extent in seeing it “robbed.” As regards the Governor's tic* tions in lif t having the proposed am* udments published in the N**w.-. we have nothing to huv. Our I'.inner acti -us in regard to matt r- of this kind prove that we ii“ ilw ays willing to do the fair ‘hi ig.
