He was formerly from Cassville, W. Va., and was about forty years of age. A few years ago he married the wi low of Wm. Burchett, .lr., of this coun ty, and moved to Catlettsburg, where for a time they conducted the Central Hotel. Ed. Hensley another Big Sandian. who recently sold out his restaurant business at Whitebouse and bought a grocery store in Catlettsburg, is in the pest house ami has a very bad case oi smallpox. It is not known bow he contracted the disease. He left the store and went home think ing be ba«i fever. Wellman was a guard at the pest where he contracted the disease. Kennedy has returned from a visit to Staunton, Va. The Kenova public schools, which opened the 7th imt., are largely at tended. E. J. Page killed a beef for Kos coe Lambert, Wednesday, that netted 1*235 lbs. Rev. M. A. Banker and (J. W. Peters were in Cincinnati last week and visited the Kail Festival. W. 11. Miller was in Charleston last week. He is now clerking in the drug store of R. Ney Williams. Mr. Page, ot Roscoe Lambert’s store, says be knows of a wedding that will take place before long. Ask him about it. Etley Smith will leave tomorrow lor Morgantown, where he will take a two years’ course in tin dicine at the West Virginia University. C. C. Coe left last night for Nor folk, Va., to meet his family, who have been spending the summer near Plymouth, Mass. They will return home with Mr. Coe. The N. A: W. R’y Co. have com pleted the stone work for the bridge connecting ilie branch line up Sandy river with the main line. The iron bridge will be erected at once, iron for same being on the ground. The bridge will be about two hundred feel long. Last Sermons. Rev. M. A. Banker, pastor of the Kenova M. E. church, will preach his last sermons for this conference year on Sunday, Sept. 20th—morn ing and evening. Rev. Banker has been pastor of the church for one year, and the church has had a won derful growth. GHE.GKS WERE, WORTHLESS. ft Kenova Man Passes Worth less Paper Upon Saloon Men at Portsmouth. Portsmouth, Sept. 14.—Worth less checks were passed on saloon keepers John Garrison and Kudy Kount/., by a Kenova, W. Va., business man, who formerly res ded ; here and who still has relatives in I Portsmouth. The discovery was made hy Kudy Kount/. and he promptly called his man to time, and upon the latter's urgent appeals to save him from falling into the clutches of the law, kept the matter quiet. Garrison, however, did not learn that he had been duped until he sent the check to the First National Hank. He was astonished to learn that the man had never had an account there. Friday evening lie was quite reliev ed upon receiving a letter from hi in dated Kenova, in whieh he explain ed all and promised he would make good the amount. The fellow came to Garrison with a hard luck story. He needed mon-1 ey and that hadly. Garrison, ever accomodating, agreed to cash his check. The amount was not very large but sufficient to answer the man’s wants and he left the place light-hearted and happy, lie is a total abstainer and did not stop to spend even tive cents with his new ly found friend in need.
